Notes

  • UMass/Temple was one of the fiercest rivalries in college basketball in the 1990s, and was televised regularly on ESPN and ABC.
  • Coaches Calipari and Chaney got into altercations during a game in 1990, then after a game in 1994.
  • In the A-10 Tournament Final from 1993-2001 (nine seasons), UMass faced Temple five times (1993-96, 2001).
  • Temple won the first 21 games of the series before UMass finally prevailed.
  • Imbalanced series. Games 1-21: Temple 21-0. Games 22-36: UMass 13-2. Games 37-62: Temple 19-7.
  • Temple went 0-16 in 3-point shots against UMass on 2/1/1996. Through the 2010-11 season, Temple has hit at least one 3 in every game since.1)
  • Though UMass held Temple to 34 and 35 points on different occasions, it was not even close to Temple's lowest-ever score. Tennessee beat Temple, 11-6, on 12/15/1973.2)3)4)
  • Temple was a member of the Atlantic 10 from 1982-83 through 2012-13. On July 1, 2013, they left the A-10 and joined the American Athletic Conference.5)
  • From 1986-93, Temple's Athletic Director was Charlie Theokas.6)7) Theokas had previously served as Commissioner of the Atlantic 10, from 1984-86.8) Charlie's son Andrew was an assistant coach at UMass, under Steve Lappas, from 2001-05.
