Both are great coaches and program builders. I would take either guy.

#4 - The balls didn't bounce the right way for Rick Pitino in Boston. If he gets Tim Duncan, history would likely be a lot different. He made a bet that the Celtics would get him, and lost. And it is hard to build in Boston via free agency. In contrast, it is a lot easier to get super stars to head to LA than Boston, so I suspect that would help as well.

No to derail the actual subject here... but I've always been of the mindset that Rick and his style would have ultimately led Tim to leave in Free Agency. I don't think they would have had enough success in Tim's first 4-5 years to warrant him wanting to stay here in Boston. It might have kept Rick around longer, sure, but looking back on things, I don't think the Tim Duncan sweepstakes ends up with Championships in Boston with Rick at the helm.
You might be right. But, once he didn't get Tim, any chance for success was gone in my opinion. If Hurley does get the Lakers job, he will have a huge built in advantage there that Rick didn't have in Boston. Most top players want to play in LA and don't need any hard sells. If the draft is a bust, he always has free agency. But, you are right in one thing for sure. If things didn't go well, Tim would be out of Boston in a flash to a better spot. The only question was if Rick could pulled it all together.

I think Hurley gets a new massive contract at UConn and stays. The Lakers do not have a championship team with 2 superstars and not much, if anything, else. How many more years does LeBron have.
If Hurley takes the Laker job, anything less than a championship, would be considered a failure.
The present Celtics have many many options. Tatum can score 16 and they can still win. With LA if LeBron or Davis has such a game, they don’t have the players to compete.

Totally agree... dead in the water when the ping pong balls didn't fall our way.

Then, a small school with no previous basketball success in UMass hired a youthful Calipari and it changed things.

I mean, I don't think UMass has ever been small, and Dr. J was pretty successful here. Even stating "little previous basketball success" would have been the way to go here.

Hard to imagine Uconn has become so prestious that even the LA Lakers cant get him to leave. But, that is the truth apparently.

I read somewhere that his current contract was around $5 million. I'll bet it has been renegotiated.

Maybe he doesn't wanna get fired by LeBron in 2 years?? I'm sure UConn made a good offer... sometimes it's better to deal with what you know... it's not like he was .aking 100k a year at UConn

Good call IMO, I do not think his schtick would play very well in the NBA.

I wonder if they told him he had to pick Bronnie and that was part of the reason he said no? I actaualy hope so.

I am not a big Hurley fan at all, but the fact that he told the Lakers to pound sand makes me like him a little bit.

Might be strategic too... it's now out there what you need to beat if you want to try and lure him to your organization.

I like this from Matt:

Matt Vautour @MattVautour424
Hurley and the Lakers will long wonder what might have been here, but while Hurley is a great tactician and a genius at leading 18-23 year olds for 40 games, his personality isn’t suited to lead men for 82. He and they would be worn out.
"Jack didn’t have any envy in him," Calipari said. "He was the greatest coach to ever coach here."

That and he'd be making $1.5 mil less than Monty Williams who has "lead" the Detroit Pistons to total suckdom.
