Great point, although I think Maxie really stuggled today at the high post. He was getting trapped and turning it over. Although GW was running more of a trapping 1-3-1/3-2 type of zone. Maxie and DG are great in the middle/high post of the 2-3.Chris20 wrote:Even the elite teams looks really bad against zone sometimes. Our struggles against it are overrated by some here.
What impressed me today was the buckets we got against the zone with Maxie ineffective/on the bench the whole game. He's been our best guy in the high post.
Even without much of a zone offense, if we move the ball and guys move and cut we are okay. We suck when guys just stand around and watch, happens with our man offense too at times, especially when Chaz is in. Guys seem to watch Chaz and expect him to do a lot when he's out there.
Hire Matt McCall!
Kudos to DK.... It still looked disjointed, but there was a lot more movement than they had been showing previously.UMass87 wrote:UMass fairly consistently beat the zone today...where's the kudos for DK?
He who has hurt them the most, helped them the most today. I still say your 4 position should not be hoisting up that many 3's (ever!) but he was on fire today. That was Carter's best game in many weeks. If he can sustain that, maybe UMass can recover from this slump.
Add to that only 10 offensive rebounds for GW and Game-Set-Match.
Now they need to beat the Dukes, Rhody and go 1-2 versus Stl/VCU/Dayton and the yare locked in. I am skeptical, but today gave me a little renewed optimism.
NICE (and badly needed) WIN!!!!
Same here. I worked 12 hours today doing a network upgrade. First game I could not keep in touch with except for the tracker.xlgman wrote:This was the first game I haven't seen this year. No radio either. I need ScottieB to come through with a replay so I can watch it tonight!!
Totally thrilled with the win. I do not care how they got it - it's awesome. Biggest win of the year IMO. Top 30 on the road and against a team fighting for a bye in the standings. Huge huge win.
It seemed like a tough game all around, frustrating, underwhelming as usual but we pulled it out at the end. What a great comeback from the last debacle.

I watched the A-10 stream. They did a simulcast with 1500 am...play by play by George Wallace and "color" guy former GW guard, Chris Monroe.Swampy wrote:Their announcer is Byron Kerr and the "color" guy is Glenn Consor. He played for Ricky P at BU back in the day.
GW had been undefeated at the Smith until today. VERY difficult to get a win there and they got it done. Pretty nice win regardless of how it got done.
Now they get a week to heal and prepare for VCU. Maybe on Friday they make some FTs and send Shaka home with another L but I'm in the camp that believes if you focus too much on making/missing FTs you can get in the heads of EVERY player and that would obviously be a bad thing.
Rest, heal, prepare Wednesday and Thursday and give VCU all they can handle. If UMass plays tough defense and gets stops it prevents the Rams from getting into their press.
I sent out a text after it was over that said..."F#ck the officials! F#ck the announcers and F#ck GW!! Jim Beam is a great listener and I feel much more calm about everything now that I've discussed a few things with him.
My good friend Don Julio agrees...F#ck the officials! F#ck the announcers and F#ck GW...same goes for Alexander Koul and Satan himself who used to annoy me with that obnoxious grin and that shiny chrome dome back when it seemed like he had UMass' and Coach Cal's number.
Don is interested in joining me at the Bill Friday night to watch P.A.I.N conquer chaos.
I hope they practice before VCU like they did before LaSalle. If they do, we'll leave the Bill with smiles on our faces Friday night!

+ 3.
Winning despite such poor free throw shooting, quite remarkable.
The UM 'D' was excellent, especially in the last 5 minutes or so of the game.
Will be there for VCU - very excited. Should be an awesome game. VCU matches us in length, given what I saw from the St. Louis game this pm.

Just got back from the beltway. Had a few more celebratory pints than expected. Wife was a great sport and drove back. Not a whole lot to add. Just a badly needed and great win. Came home just in time to see byu take down st Mary's. Cherry on top. Just a great day great to see maroon in the crowd. Good atmosphere. My wife not a bball fan by any stretch loved the game. Although she is not a knowledgable observer interesting to hear her say how much she has enjoyed our games at hawk hill and gw versus the 2 games we saw at Mullins versus PC and youngstown. Anyway I degress. A good one today

UMass beat them in the first round of the A-10 tourney last season...but I know what you're saying. Beating GW always feel a little better given the history of the rivalry.Big10Land wrote:I'm glad that GW is on the rise and that we beat them on their court. How long has it been for the last two charter members of the Eastern 8 to play a meaningful game.
