Head Coach Search 2024

Post by jjmc85 » Mon Nov 18, 2024 1:03 pm

Now that there’s a vacancy, who do you think is the best bet to finally bring UMass football to some sort of respectability?

Personally, I’d take this list, sort by winning percentage, and consider anyone with a good percentage who has coached more than 20 games and who is not looking to retire in the next 10 years.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_c ... ll_coaches
UMass Football: 22-3 at home when I was a student.

Leave the A-10!

what would it take to get an FCS guy at an established program like Jimmy Rogers at South Dakota State or Brent Vigen at Montana State? Both those guys make far less than Don Brown did

I assume those fcs coaches had opportunities to be in the fbs. Not sure we are a destination. Agree to reach out of course. I'd be fine if our next coach left for some awesome gig.

Most of you are way ahead of me regarding past UMass guys, but I will throw out the name Aazar Abdul-Rahim, currently on the staff at BC.

He's now back at Maryland, but this is his first season there. Seems like he has some heavy ties to the DMV area, so not sure he'd want to come back up here especially after working for Bell. Not a bad call out though

Carvel’s father-in-law was a UM Professor; Martin’s wife is an Alum……any top level football coaches fit in that model😁

Can't blame him for taking that huge pay increase. He apparently wanted to stay even with the offer he got. Could use his recruiting especially if we're able to increase the budget for it

No thanks to Rahim.

Ferrante at Nova and Gattusso at Albany should both be interviewed. Obviously Hauck/Rogers/Vigen But Ideally I want somebody who has been successful in the MAC - the best MAC Coordinator we can find - for example - Vince Kehres or Mike Hallett at Toledo.

Tom Herman - Florida Atlantic

Expected to be owed $4 million……..doesn’t need to get rich…….just resurrect his career….as in , “If he can win there, he can win anywhere.!”
Texas and Florida recruiting will be a huge PLUS in the MAC.

Herman arrived at FAU after taking off two years from coaching amid hopes he could do great things at the Boca Raton-based university off his track record. He made Houston a Group of Five power going 22-4 in two years before being hired at Texas where he was 32-18 with four consecutive bowl wins and three consecutive top 25 finishes.

What does 32-18 at Texas translate to in the MAC?

Almost forgot……. Herman is a member of Mensa International!!!!

My strong preference is to hire someone with Head Coaching experience. We've failed twice with first time head coaches with Molnar and Bell. Skimmed through this article and favor Santos in this list.

Joe Harasymiak is an interesting name. From north Jersey, played at Springfield College, and brought Maine to an FCS semifinal and earned FCS coach of the year honors. Since then he's been with Minnesota as a positional coach and is currently at Rutgers as DC. If being from the NE, having FCS head coach success, and being familiar with big time FBS football are requirements, he checks those boxes.
