I'm out the loop, too. Hadn't heard about the possible name change. Personally, I like the historical ties to the Minutemen. The original minutemen were instrumental in the American Revolution. In D-1, it is a completely unique name.

The UMass Wolves? Jezz, we have a bad game and I can see the headlines "Wolves are Roadkill." Nah. Stick the with name we have!

Focus groups seem to run everything these days, from CNN broadcasts to what crappy new name the athletic dept can come up with for the Minutemen.

Since The Wolves is so damned generic, maybe UMassHoops.com can top Phoenix with some suggestions. The focus group is built in. How's about:

UMass Aggies (better than The Wolves!)
UMass Tree Huggers (see above)
UMass Peaceniks (see above)
UMass MCs
UMass Macks
This aggression will not stand, man

In all seriousness......Wolves is just plain awful. At least they could make it Timberwolves or something besides just plain old Wolves.

What would be some serious suggestions from you all if the decision was made to ditch the Mintueman mascot??? I don't know if I have any at the moment but I can put some thought in to it.

 BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!! Arf-arses, omigod that is funny!

The nice thing about being middle aged is that my wife never ever refers to me as "minuteman."

Jeez. Good point. I don't want any misunderstandings when we sing "Who let the dogs out!"

In all seriousness, what a stupid idea. I am totally against changing the mascot.

Terrible, terrible, terrible. There is nothing that I know of that identifies Wolves with Massachusetts. Like someone said the Minuteman is a unique D1 mascot.

I was at UMass for the last name change and I don't remember very many good suggestions (even Minutemen was not met with rousing approval). There was one suggestion for a breed of horse that was popular around those parts (the Morgan?) and someone made a convincing argument for that mascot (running him out on the field, ala Florida State, etc.)

See my comment of this date in the General Forum for more information on the suggestion that Minutemen be scrapped.
