Erving-era uniforms
Erving-era uniforms
Who here can share some knowledge about Julius Erving's era? This guy on Twitter is all things Julius, but needs some help:

Looks like the freshman team used Massachusetts shirts as the varsity went with Redmen for the 68/69 season. I seem to recall the vertical Redmen on the shorts during at least one of my early/mid 70's seasons.
I only looked at small amount of the Collegian articles, there are probably better examples.

One of the guy's questions was about road uniforms. 69/70 was Massachusetts.

I have my 1969 Index open to the hoops pages now.
Black and white pics...
The white home unis: REDMEN
The darker (maroon): MASSACHUSETTS
Several pics of the REDMEN unis in action.
One nice pic of Jack holding a ball smiling with Joey D and Peter Gayeska, wearing the road MASSACHUSETTS, smiling at Jack.
No frosh pics in this Index.
Rich Vogeley is around MA I believe. He likely would know re: that frosh team.
Other piece from 1968-1969 is my Varsity sweater which has been in the 3rd floor Mullins display case for many years...
Heavy maroon button down cardigan...Maroon with a big white M. It was originally nicely laid out in full view. Last time I saw it, it was somewhat bunched up behind other Sweaters.
I gave it to Jack to present as a donation from me. Athletics never officially recognized it as such (no receipt or recognition), so I consider it to be a long-term loan item from me.

In harbo’s second post, there’s an article regarding the hockey team. If you can blow it up and read it, they report that PAT KEENAN scored a hat trick that day! Pretty cool!harbo wrote: Sun Jul 12, 2020 9:57 pm Varsity went with Redmen for 69/70

A few days after a one-point loss to Springfield College, here is the write up of UMass' takedown of Syracuse, led by Erving's legendary 36 points and 32 rebounds. Totally foreign to today's fans, the crowd was chanting, "NIT! NIT! NIT!"

I was there for both of those games. If Dr. J was allowed to do a dunk we would have won that game but dunking was not allowed at that time during games.

That Syracuse game was unbelievable. Julius had a game for the ages but the best part was in the locker room he didn’t act any different then any of us - that was how he was. No big deal we won and we were all happy. With Julius it was all about team. Couldn’t have played with a better guy.
The other thing were the fans. The best student support you could ever imagine. Totally behind us and they were Loud.

Re: Erving-era uniforms
A couple of oddball questions for anyone who may have played on Erving era squads.
1) I noticed that in some game photos, the entire teams seems to be sporting dark laces. A little before my time, but I would have assumed that white shoes of that era only came with a single set of white laces.
2) And based on some UMass and Virginia Squires photos, it would seem that Doc is possibly wearing two different sized Chucks (9 vs 8 pairs of eyelets)

I took one of my co-workers to that game, his first UMass game, and after that game he said that anytime I had the extra ticket he would be willing to go. At that time I had a season ticket with my very good friend Walter Urban.tom mclaughlin wrote: Tue Jul 14, 2020 9:18 am That Syracuse game was unbelievable. I was a senior. I bought my 1st season ticket ($35) that season so I wouldn't have to blow off an afternoon on line to see a game.

I even figured out how you got to the games when your good friend season tix holder couldn't go with you...Berkman wrote: Wed Sep 30, 2020 1:34 pmI took one of my co-workers to that game, his first UMass game, and after that game he said that anytime I had the extra ticket he would be willing to go. You went with your co-worker in a suburban.

You counted the number of eyelets in his shoes? I'm impressed. That's some attention to detail!DrJStuff wrote: Wed Sep 30, 2020 12:43 pm A couple of oddball questions for anyone who may have played on Erving era squads.
