Game 6, 2016-17: Wagner (11/30)

Post by MikeUMA » Tue Nov 15, 2016 11:33 am

Getting this started early, because we already had a common opponent.

Wagner got a great start to their season, defeating UConn in Storrs, 67-58.

Wagner won the glass, and the sled dogs only shot 36% (vs Wagner's 38%).

Yesterday, they played UMass-Lowell, in Lowell, and lost 87-76.

Lowell shot better, 51 to 36%. Wagner dominated the glass, including 25 offensive rebounds, but that wasn't enough.

Between now and our game on 11/30, Wagner has:
vs Fairfield
at American
vs Rider

Our own Mike Babul is Wagner's Associate Head Coach.

2 games, 2 strong showings on the offensive glass for Wagner. Might as well chalk this one up as an L now.

It's safe to expect UMass will lose on the boards to Wagner but I expect a win in the game.

We should be able to beat Wagner, even without Deeky and Baldwin if he can't go. They are a very small team with only one big who gives them decent production. Aaman is 6-8, 260 and averages 10 points and 7.6 rebounds. He's a transfer from URI. Their other big, Sumbry (6-8, 230) averages 4.2 points and 3.2 boards in 15 minutes.

Most of the scoring comes from their guards.
Henson (6-3) scores 14.8
Carey (6-5) scores 13.8 and gets 8.4 boards
Cooper (6-0) scores 11 and gets 7.2 boards

They bring a couple of guards off the bench (Francis and Liggeons) who have done OK from 3 thus far.

They have been without Saunders, who scored 15 against UConn and broke a bone in his foot. They are 2-3 with losses to Lowell, Fairfield, and Rider. Besides the UConn win, they beat an 0-4 American Univ. team.

The rebounding is a concern for me. We lost the glass by 12 to Harvard. Wagner's best 3 guys average 7.9 between them, while our best rebounders top out at 6.4 (Clark & Holloway each).

Depth is the difference though. If we can get any one of those guys in foul trouble, that might help.

You mean the best 3 guys average 7.9 each? Because 7.9 between them is not very impressive.

Their 3 best rebounders average 8.4, 7.6 and 7.2 so an average of 7.9 between them. Not adding up to 7.9 a game total. By contrast, our top 3 rebounders average 6.4, 6.4 and 4.3. Which comes to 5.7 per player.

On the show from The Hangar last night DK said he still wasnt sure about when/if Unique Mclean will play. Dontae was interviewed after DK. DK said he wants Dontae to be the guy that the team goes to when they need leadership and when he fouled out at Ole Miss it hurt team. There were some other good points made but I cant remember them now. Not sure if podcast of show available at UMass Athletics.

Although heavy rain is being predicted for tomorrow night, I'm hoping to see a decent crowd that includes lots of students.

I'll be there +3, but I'm not optimistic about the students/crowd with Wagner being the opponent and heavy rain. Anything over 3,000 will be a pleasant surprise.
