KAEO Donte Clark

Post by Old Cage » Fri Jul 05, 2013 1:49 pm

Alex Kline ‏@TheRecruitScoop 4m

Former Virginia Tech commit Donte Clark - 2013 SG from Hargrave Military (VA) - has committed to UMass, per @justinbyerly.

(For Mike - Justin is Director of Recruiting for http://BasketballElite.com , writer and analyst for http://CarolinaPreps.com . Asheville, NC)

(For Len - So much for your "no more 'ships" post. :) Unless he will sit a year to qualify on his own dime.)

"Jack didn’t have any envy in him," Calipari said. "He was the greatest coach to ever coach here."

Looks like a huge GET! Ranked 116 in the country with offers from all over. Another partial qualifier I'm assuming? Va. TEch doesn't allow partial qualifiers so I'm assuming he must be one and will have to sit a year ala Santee and get it done in the classroom. Another opportunistic recruiting get by DK and company.

Sweet! Yeah, seems like he already signed his LOI per the Rivals site so he would have to sit a year. Probably academics, so he would have to sit anyway. Good job by DK and staff. Welcome aboard Donte!

Go Umass!

Definitely a big fan of this recruit, a top 150 recruit, we have not got one of those in a long time, really pumped about this, kid seems like a great athlete and a really good shooter! And more importantly, a legitimate scorer.

Also, it helps that he played against top competition at the high school level already, this is a great one.

Heres a highlight tape (its 2 years old by the way)

Rivals has him listed as a SG, ESPN has him listed as a SF. I definitely see a little bit of both, definitely a combo 2-3 athlete, real nice.

According to this link DK must've caught wind he didn't get admitted to Va. Tech and pounced. Looks like a partial qualifier but still being reviewed by the Clearinghouse. Played at Hargrave Academy-- one of the better programs in the country and also where Freddie Riley went. Link describes him as the "gem" of the Va. Tech class.

Edit: wow at his highlight tape. Kid can really elevate and is long!

Sounds like the NCAA is still looking at him. If you signed a LOI but the school denied your admission would you have to sit a year if you end up getting cleared? Im assuming he sits because of the scholly situation.

Clark might be able to play this yr. He was denied admission because the NCAA hasn't cleared him yet to be eligible. I believe VT has someone they want who has already cleared his process.

I don't think we can discount the possibility that someone we expect to be at UMass this upcoming year is now not going to be there. It also sounds like Clark might still be eligible for next year. That being said, the most likely scenario is that Clark isn't eligible next year and we still have everyone this upcoming year that we expected.

Per Matty V, he won't be playing this year.

"Clark won’t be allowed to play or practice during the 2013-14 season, but provided he maintains the required academic progress pace, he can have four years of eligibility beginning in 2014-15. He won’t count against UMass’ scholarship total until then, effectively making him coach Derek Kellogg’s first recruit in for the 2014 freshman class."

One of my absolute favorite things about this site is the KAEO threads, but damn, stuff like this that comes so out of the blue makes it seem so unimportant

It shines a light on just how little we know about what's going on, and how stupid it is to complain about the type of players we are recruiting, where they're from, etc.
