Lawrence Carrier

Spfld paper reports Lawrence Carrier from Salisbury school in CT leaning towards UMASS. Down to us and Colorado. 6-8, 240, supposedly a national top 10 prospect at one time before injuries limited him. I know I've seen his name in the past. Hopefully he'll sign, but probably won't be eligible next year academically. Also hope his injuries haven't diminished his skills too much.

When I heard we had a shot at Carrier I looked back in some of the Prepstars archives and found that he had some monster games for Salisbury. One game he had like 35 points along with double digit rebounds. Salisbury was rated a top 20 Prep team all season long so this was against decent competition. It seemed as though his game was improving as the season went along. Prepstars currently has him rated 80 something. Hoop Scoop rated him in the top 5-10 5th year players. Hopefully we sign this guy and he stays healthy. Go Umass!

He's looking at two school's with coaches who have done a nice job with big guys FOR THE MOST PART.

Colorado had a really good frontcourt this year. The kid Pelle graduates, the other kid might have been just a sophomore. Their frontcourt beat up on some good teams like Texas and Kansas.

He is ranked No. 8 nationally by Prep Spotlight, No. 10 by Hoop Scoop, No. 22 by School Sports, No. 23 by Prep Stars Recruiter's Handbook and No. 24 by The Insiders Hoops. I think this is two summers ago.

I don't know the story behind this kid but it also goes on to mention that he was looking at Duke, UCLA, Michigan, etc. once upon a time.

He's had injury problems? What kind of injuries?

Lawrence Carrier, a 6-7, 232-pound combo forward from the Salisbury School in Salisbury, Connecticut, impressed RivalsHoops.com at the Three Stripes Tournament with his multi-faceted game.

Carrier handles the ball well, and is strong off the dribble. He has a sturdy frame, good strength, and runs the floor well. Lawrence can step out and can the three. It remins to be seen how consistently he can do it.

Carrier lists Miami (FL), Arizona State, USC, UConn, Florida State, Colorado, and North Carolina. According to Carrier "most of them" have offered.

Carrier has taken unofficial visits to Arizona State, USC, and UCLA.

"I'll probably visit Miami and visit UConn during the school year," said Carrier. "I'll probably visit North Carolina, too."

Carrier is just getting back on the court after tearing his lateral meniscus and having surgery in March. He started playing about a month ago.

Carrier, who averaged 21 points and 12 rebounds through six games at Salisbury, will attend the Vegas Big Time Tournament with the "Inland I" team of the Inland Valley(IEBP) program.

Carrier carries a 2.2 scholastic GPA. He has scored 890 on the SAT.

I remember when Carrier used to be a top 5 prospect in his class - this was going back to when he was in 8th/9th/10th grade.

On ESPN, Carrier is lsited as a super prospect. If its true, this class of Bowers, Maxwell, and Carrier and others will be great in a few years. It may be a wait but when these guys are seniors, watch out!!!

Carrier SF 6-7
Freeman PF 6-7
Briggs C 6-9

Carrier is not a super recruit. He just never improved or lived up to his rankings of past years. He has some skills, but he's not in great shape and I think he really needs a coach who will be on his case from day one. Whether Lappas fits the bill or not, I don't know.

We'll find out though. He signed with UMass.

He did sign?

I know this kid has had injury problems but everything I have read says he has a ton of skills.

Sitting out a year to rest and get himself in shape would be a good thing.

From all reports, Freeman will be a very strong leader and is a warrior on the court. Playing against this kid everyday in practice once he becomes eligible will do a lot for Carrier as well as the other big men.

UMass isn't going to get the kind of player that a UConn can recruit right now. This is exactly the type of player we should be recruiting and it's great news we got him. If he was perfect in every way and still in the top 10 then UNC, Duke, UConn, AZ, etc... would be recruiting. But the key is that he has top 10 skills, limited by injuries, and hey maybe the next year off he can get his game together, get in shape, rehab and get a year ahead in his studies. Best case we land a top 10 player that leads UMass back to the promised land. If he doesn't get all the way back, the odds are probably pretty good that he'll have as much impact as any #200 or so ranked kid we could have signed. I'll take the upside!

Salisbury School (Conn.) senior forward Lawrence Carrier, once considered an elite prospect whose stock plummeted because of numerous injuries, committed to UMass.

The 6-8, 230-pound Carrier, a California native, chose the Minutemen over Colorado and likely will sit out his freshman season because of academics.

Carrier, who averaged 20.3 points and 9.3 rebounds per game, was also recruited at one time or another by Indiana, Miami, Utah and Arizona State.

Carrier is a skilled player for his size and is more of a wing forward who has battled back, ankle and meniscus injuries throughout his career at Salisbury. He is more comfortable shooting threes and handling the ball than posting up down low.

Carrier joins guard Art Bowers and 6-6 Maurice Maxwell as UMass recruits.

He states he chose Umass because of Steve Lappas. Take that Brulaughs.
