Oh well. Hopefully the 4 CCHA series go 3 games. Would be especially helpful if some of the CCHA teams ahead of UMass lost in 3.
Would it be better if they lost in 2?

Escaped with the W! We are the #2 seed.

Not sure we deserved that one. Lot of the play was in our end. With ~6 minutes left Galanek commits a boarding penalty and they don't call it. UMass scores right after. UNH challenges for a major which would have wiped out the goal. They don't win but should've been a 2 minute minor. Empty netter seals the 4-2 victory.

Up to #14 in NPI. Every other ranked hockey east team lost tonight except for Providence who took care of UConn for us.

Doesn’t “premature goalie substitution”
= too many men on the ice ???

I have two possible explanations:
1) Make up call for missing the boarding before the goal

2) IIRC I think the linesman needs to tell the team when they can put the extra skater on for the goalie. Maybe one linesman told them to come on way too early (for a bit of a make up) but the other blew the play dead because of the too many men. Can’t call it if the linesman tells them it’s ok to bring the guy on. I might be wrong about this rule with the linesman needing to clear the extra skater. I’ve never actually played ice hockey so someone correct me if I’m wrong.

jjmc85 wrote: Mon Mar 02, 2026 11:18 am It really sucks. If that happened the other way, we’d all be livid-or at least I would be livid.

At the very least, I think UMass should be banned from in building light show goal celebrations moving forward until given the OK by an on ice official.

Edit: here’s the play for anyone who missed it.

This was huge in the standings. Who knows if UConn scores or not if the lights don’t flash, but there’s a very real possibility the 4 vs 5 games happens in Amherst instead of Orono because of this, and quite frankly that sucks.
I think it ended up not mattering in the hockey east standings. UMass beat UConn by two points. If UConn scores, they get one more point, UMass gets one less. That leaves them tied. I believe UMass would have won the tie breaker (4 pts to 2, head to head).

Still sucks this happened and obviously may still end up mattering meaningfully in NPI

Somebody needs to tell the people who’re the “official” UMass website that UMass won tonight’s game!

Good win. Not sure where this notion of “not sure we deserved” came from. If you score more goals than your opponent, you win the hockey game. That’s literally the point of hockey. Fiddling around on offense and not scoring = losing. Great way to wrap up the RS now let’s go take down HE !!! :) :D :D

Hockey East:
3rd place with 40 points, behind PC and UConn (41 points).
-UConn faces PC - will be interesting to see if PC keeps their foot on the gas or rests up for the HE Tournament.
-UMass plays at UNH - need to win, plain and simple. Big chance at getting up to 2, and also need to hold off BC (4th place, 39 points).

NCAA Tournament (NPI):
Up to 18 after last night's win. Long way to go here, still a chance. I still think we need to win out until the HE Finals and have a lot of other games go our way.
- In a vacuum, beating UNH jumps us to 15.

As Jake Taylor famously said to Roger Dorn and the Cleveland Indians: "Well, then, I guess there's only one thing left to do. .... Win the whole fucking thing."

So last night was huge... not only did we win and UConn lose to get us into the 2-seed in HE, but things bounced right elsewhere and we jumped to 14 in the NPI. Still a lot of work to be done, but we are a bit more in control of our own destiny. Gotta keep winning.

After the first half, I absolutely believed it was HE Championship or bust for the NCAA Tournament. It is a team sport, but the fact that UMass is in the hunt for an at-large is due to one person: Michael Hrabal.
