How is one of our highest rated recruits (ever) a preferred walk on?

Seems we are signing preferred walk ons at an increasing rate this year, but it may be just my erroneous perception due to more "hype" on social media these signings have gotten.
It is a good way to get players that can be developed but I hope it's not because we can't sign the scholarship/NIL players we really want and need.
