Point shaving in men's college hoop

Post by MikeUMA » Thu Jan 15, 2026 1:28 pm

Relax . . . no UMass implication here. Just posting this because recent news MIGHT have some paths that cross UM...

One of the players named in today's indictment is Bradley Ezewiro, who played at SLU in 2023-24.
We beat SLU in Chaifetz that season, something we hadn't done in 9 years.
Ezewiro played in that game, but he went 4-4 from the field with zero turnovers, so probably nothing there. https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/bo ... louis.html
An NBC article lists games that might have been fixed, but none mention UMass.

EMU's Carlos Hart was also named. He played in the game against us on 12/30, where EMU won, in a game where UM was favored, so probably nothing there. Could the NCAA go nuclear and declare Hart ineligible for his entire career? I doubt it, but if they do, we could end up with a vacated win. But even if they do rule that, it probably won't happen before it'd really matter to us, which would be before this year's MAC tournament.

Airion Simmons, a teammate of our Leo Bettiol at Abilene Christian, was also named. No indication that Leo had any connection other than being teammates.

Could be huge impact on the MAC, as Ohio, Western Michigan and Kent State are listed as being investigated.

quote from there:"The betting amounts are eye-opening: $458,000 for NC A&T to lose against Towson; $424,000 on Kent State to cover a first-half spread vs. Buffalo"

Thanks for the new thread, Mike! To consolidate, my post from the Around the A10 thread earlier:

Wasn't sure where else to put this... but multiple A10 schools listed as part of today's point-shaving investigation news. This stuff is from the last few years, September 2022-February 2025 while we were still in the A10. A few MAC schools listed as well.

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/rigging-co ... stigation/

Games involving the following teams were allegedly rigged or impacted, investigators say: Alabama State, Western Michigan University, Butler, St. John's, Tulane, East Carolina, McNeese State, Nicholls State, St. Louis University, Duquesne, La Salle, Fordham, SUNY Buffalo, Kent State, Ohio University, Georgetown and DePaul.

...

Crazy stuff. $ will cause people to do most anything.

Maybe a sign of the times? All from lower tier ($$$ wise) schools. Getting relative peanuts in NIL money and looking at the 6 figure deals the guys at the power conference schools are getting? The BCS started turning me off on college football. The NIL may finish the job with college bb.

I don't think this is a big deal at all, guys. It's just illegal gambling and point shaving. I just hope they don't have any landline phone jacks in their apartments. That's where you can really get into trouble.

6-figure deals are for bench warmers. The good players make millions.

Oh, no doubt... UMass likely will get all of Athletics disbanded from the Earth because of that EMU kid.
