Post by Berkman » Wed Mar 12, 2025 1:50 pm

UMass is playing here at Davidson this weekend. I am going to try and make the game on Friday and maybe on Sunday.

Went to the game and left after 6 innings. We had a bad 5 th inning and gave up 4 runs, Changed pitchers for the 6 and the first batter hit a home run. Score was 5 - 2 after 6. Spoke to several UMass fans at the game.

At Davidson, won the first game 13 - 8 and lost the second 13 - 10. Played a doubleheader because of the bad weather forecast-ed for Sunday.

I put this in the general discussion forum but will put it here as well since proceeds go to support the baseball team:

I caught this article in the Gazette this morning about UMass baseball alum Andrew Tuetken. He's been putting together history books for 21st century UMass sports. Proceeds go directly to the baseball program. It sounds like he's put quite a bit of time into this, obviously a labor of love.

I figured this is the best spot for a Gazette article on Jeff Reardon. https://gazettenet.com/2025-marks-40-ye ... s-62667548

^ "502 Bad Gateway" I went to the Gazette site and got the same.
"Jack didn’t have any envy in him," Calipari said. "He was the greatest coach to ever coach here."

Huh, damn. Here it is again https://gazettenet.com/2025-marks-40-ye ... s-62667548

The Gazette website is sometimes really slow for me. Maybe they're just having a bad day over there.

Coach Reynolds has left the program: https://twitter.com/KendallRogers/statu ... 4368350235

I wonder what happened there. Reynolds is an alum.

Nothing on the Wesleyan site...
Still shows the Interim HC.

I hate to say it because I love baseball and want UMass to have a program, but is it time to shut it down? Seriously underfunded, and if Matt Reynolds is leaving to go to D3 Wesleyan, things can't be very good over there.

And now Curry Hicks Sage is hearing this:
https://x.com/CurryHicksSage/status/1957619776781762704
Per source: Bamford is telling industry people insiders that there’s no vacancy at the moment. Says there will be “two acting head coaches for 2025-26” and that he’ll “determine leadership plan for 2026 and beyond” at a later time.
That doesn't sound good. Two acting head coaches? Man, it certainly sounds like it might be time to drop baseball, as much as I don't want to admit it.

It's been discussed before. 1 scholarship makes baseball a D3 team competing in D1. As in probably every non-revenue sport, there are some die-hard followers. But it's hard to follow a program that is bound to lose much more than it wins. I'm probably the wrong person to comment on this as I have been to exactly 1 baseball game in the last 10 years. And that may be par for the course.
