I would ask the same question of spending $200M on White Stadium.doubledribble wrote: Thu Dec 26, 2024 5:56 pmYou could be right but is it worth spending worth that amount of money?eldonabe wrote: Thu Dec 26, 2024 2:04 pmInnervisionsUMASS wrote: Thu Dec 26, 2024 1:44 pm
This is a public-private thing... on the public side, it's a city funded project, though I'm sure some of that is monies funneled through the state
It doesn't matter.... A Umass stadium would generate more money in two years than that place will make in Women's pro-soccer forever.
I think it’s safe to say that no matter how much a new stadium would generate it would take MANY years to cover the costs.(f they are ever covered)

Anybody see the movie “The Brutalist”? Well Brutalist architecture is in now. Maybe we can designate McGuirk as an example, and secure state funding for preservation, restoration and improvements. Just kidding…kind of.

You mean Brutalism is back in, you mean? Because it went out awhile ago and should never come back and 93% of the brutalist architecture currently crumbling should be blown to hell.
If it is indeed back, we're all fucking doooooooooooooomed.

I'm not giving McGuirk any grace, but I think it's pretty cool that SOM designed our stadium. That's some pedigree for sure.Bags wrote: Mon Dec 30, 2024 12:03 pm Anybody see the movie “The Brutalist”? Well Brutalist architecture is in now. I’ll note that SOM doesn’t talk about it at all. In fact sports faculties are not part of their stated “expertise”. Maybe McGuirk was all they needed to create to be like, “eh, we will stick with what we know”. LOL.McKinney wrote: Tue Dec 31, 2024 7:37 pmI'm not giving McGuirk any grace, but I think it's pretty cool that SOM designed our stadium. LOL! In hindsight, I'm sure you're right. At the time, brutalism architecture was all the rage and I'm sure this served it purpose nicely for a few years.

Re: McGuirk Upgrade
The stadium is nothing more than stands. Walls, concourses, facades, etc. can and should be added. Even if the stands were knocked down, the replacement stands are not going to look much different. Every football stadium I’ve been to looks the same in that regard. Even in Georgia, the aluminum benches were bolted to concrete, and there were concrete tunnels, etc.InnervisionsUMASS wrote: Fri Jan 03, 2025 1:51 pmUMassNet15 wrote: Fri Jan 03, 2025 1:43 pm

Penn State Beaver Stadium starting overhaul. $$$ are toward the bottom of the article.
https://www.statecollege.com/articles/ ... e
I suspect they will spend more on the press box than Umass is spending on their entire "upgrade" package.

Re: McGuirk Upgrade
What a different world down there... can you imagine UMass having a ceremonial demolition with Sam the Minuteman and fans signing seats? UMass would never even think to do creative stuff like that.

Wow! Beaver stadium was already a very cool place. Probably going to be pretty sick after a 700 million $ reno.

Just saw this. The poster is from NBCSN so he's no crackpot or troll. Of course there are no details.

Some UMass football rumors: hearing UMass has received a “sizable” financial commitment for stadium improvements. Would certainly be putting their money where their mouth is if true

Think this is towards the 10-12 short term improvements to McGuirk.
From the 2024 Football Vision:
We have developed a master plan for McGuirk that includes short-term (next 1-2 years) investments of an additional $10-12M and long-term (8-10 years) investments ($50M+) that will update and modernize the facility. With many of the important health and safety projects either completed or in-process, our primary objective with any short-or-long-term stadium project is to upgrade the fan experience.
In particular, the short-term plans include additional ADA upgrades, new premium seating offerings along the sidelines, concessions upgrades, and major aesthetic upgrades to the face of the stadium and groundwork surrounding the stadium creating a more appealing event space and experience. We also plan to undertake a comprehensive review of our sound system to better serve all areas of the stadium. We are making good progress on securing funding for the short-term projects, using a phased renovation approach to start in 2025 and be fully completed within 2.5 years.
Be proud of the present and look to the future.
