KAEO Matt McCall

Post by MikeUMA » Sun Apr 07, 2024 10:26 am

Lots of places where McCall has been discussed around here, but creating one for the next chapters in his post-UM career.

After two seasons of being an analyst, NBC Sports being among them, Matt is getting back into coaching. He landed an assistant role at Charleston, under head coach Chris Mack.

Ironically, the job was open after Pat Kelsey and his staff moved to Louisville. McCall might not have been available for this Charleston gig if the sequence of events in 2017 (Kelsey backing out of the UMass offer, McCall ultimately getting the gig) hadn't occurred.

Good for coach McCall. He has been outstanding on TV, and making a commitment to your family has to be commended. I'll look forward to continue seeing and listening to him on broadcasts.

Oh wow. Good for him... he's been pretty good on TV. Nice to see someone prioritizing their family as well.

It helps that he made a lot of money here

Can't fault someone for prioritizing their family. And I'm sure he does ok financially with the broadcasting gig. Money isn't everything. Wonder what the comparison between broadcasting & an assistant at Charleston is financially.

So how weird is the circle here?

2017: UMass tries to hire Pat Kelsey
Kelsey accepts, but then has a change of heart, stays in his current job
UM pivots to McCall

2022: UM parts ways with McCall
McCall gets into broadcasting

2024: Pat Kelsey, now with College of Charleston, gets a higher profile gig
C of C builds a new staff, McCall gets an assistant job there
McCall has a change of heart, stays in his current job

He seems like a good dude and he’s pretty good on TV. I’ll always root for the guy.
