That right there is a good example of how NOT to sell this to the people that don't like the MAC move.
How did Steve think that was a good idea? Oh lawdy
Re: MAC Sports topics that include Hoops
Back in the day, they A10 always had great point guards. Where we lack was in what I called Big East size. If a middling MAC program can get a Big Ten role player, sure we will do very well with Frank in the MAC. Did not post Akron's transfers from West Virginia and UNC as expect top MAC teams to be able to grab some players. Like in football, power conference good players, buried in the depth charts looking for playing time and to show of their skills.inthescoop wrote: Mon Apr 15, 2024 3:09 pmInnervisionsUMASS wrote: Sat Apr 13, 2024 3:04 pm ^

Definitely would need Lumpy Rutherford on the court with them.harbo wrote: Sat Apr 13, 2024 6:53 pmInnervisionsUMASS wrote: Sat Apr 13, 2024 3:04 pm ^

My first thought was that we could recruit Wally Cleaver to go up against Eddie Haskell.
The angle of incidence = the angle of reflection: REBOUND!

" Ward please, take it easy on the Beaver." Barbara Billingsley as June Cleaver circa 1958.

This is a post from the MAC board after Missouri State commits to CUSA and going FBS.

Seems that a good majority of their fan base want to stay put … That’s OK, time for the MAC to focus on an Albany, Stony Brook, or Illinois State add as the next 14th member further in the future !!
1) Travel partner for UMass.
2) "Name" athletic school.
3) Takes another bite out of the A10.
4) Close enough to NYC for BB recruiting.
I don't see the other call-ups offering that much in basketball. Rhode Island would be another school like UMass that would regularly finish in the Top 8 and qualify for the tournament in Cleveland.
There is no stadium capacity requirement for FBS anymore either.

Would regularly qualify for the top 8? How exactly is that assumption justified?Steve81 wrote: Fri May 10, 2024 11:20 am This is a post from the MAC board after Missouri State commits to CUSA and going FBS.

Support for Umass/MAC is going to be suspect at best. What kid worth anything is going to want to play in a 20% of capacity building for a minimal shot at the big dance from a one-bid league? Rhody does not have to worry about a FBS budget. There is no way they end up in the MAC. There is a better shot the end up in the Big East FFS.
Re: MAC Sports topics that include Hoops
There is a 100% chance that the MAC will be better than the A10 in about 3 years..wake up..eldonabe wrote: Fri May 10, 2024 11:29 amWould regularly qualify for the top 8? I cannot and will not dispute that statement Maz. I will however, question Umass' position within the MAC in that time.

All due respect, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart, I'm gonna pass.
Re: MAC Sports topics that include Hoops
It's being reported by the Gazette that the new MAC ESPN deal will be 2-2.5M each and then added in 1.6M for the CFP while the PAC-2 are carving out 6.4M and UConn 350k from the G5. That's 3M more than the future A10 and CFP extension figure. The 3M comes in handy as the NCAA settlement will be lower in the MAC, but still in the 400-500k range. That is significant money for the entire athletic department to lift all boats/sports.

Year 1 probably includes the 500k entrance fee being withheld. While UMass’ revenues will take a hit, it’ll also see a large increase in TV revenue because of the MAC’s football media rights deal with ESPN, which will pay the school about $1.5-2.5 million per year. This is several times what UMass would expect to earn from Atlantic 10 revenues, which come primarily from men’s basketball. The Minutemen will receive 75% of a share of MAC distributions in 2025-26 (expected to be between $1.5-2 million) and a full share every year thereafter (expected to be between $2-2.5 million).

That is not bad money at all. It is unfortunate that this is all still an entire year away.
Re: MAC Sports topics that include Hoops
Agree Eldonabe. The MAC has good leadership as Chris Turner, Deputy Commissioner/COO.
In his role, Turner will be engaged in several facets of the Conference’s operations, including overseeing the league’s long-standing partnerships with ESPN and CBS Sports, and serving as the liaison to the directors of athletics. He will oversee the management of football, including a lead role in the conference’s host responsibilities for the MAC Football Championship Game. Turner will also be responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the league office.
“After a search that involved a number of highly qualified individuals, Chris Turner emerged as the person to assume this important position,” said MAC Commissioner Jon Steinbrecher. “I look forward to Chris joining our staff and playing a vital role in the strategic direction and operation of the Conference.”
Prior to his time at the USOPC, Turner spent 25 years at ESPN where he most recently held the position of Vice President overseeing all aspects of SEC Network business and delivering hundreds of millions in annual revenue over the network’s first 6 ½ years.
During his tenure at ESPN, Turner was also instrumental in co-leading a division that created ESPN owned and operated football bowl games and multi-team basketball events.
Be proud of the present and look to the future.
