Game 19, 2022-23: at Saint Joe's (1/21)
We're on to Saint Joe's.
Saturday at 1:00 on Hawk Hill. ESPN+ has it.
SJU is currently 8-10 / 2-4, coming off a win across town at La Salle last night, 71-59. That's two straight for SJU, with the previous a big 86-55 win at home over Lo-Chi.
UM is 3-0 vs Billy Lange, and on a 4-game win streak over SJU in general. I'd like to think we should keep that going, but SJU beating La Salle in Gola, when La Salle beat us in Amherst, gives me pause.
Common opponents:
Albany. We won in Amherst, 87-73. SJU won in Philly, 99-79.
South Florida. We won at USF, 73-67. SJU lost to them in Daytona, 75-62.
CCSU. We won in Amherst, 94-67. SJU won in Philly, 83-66.
SLU. We won in Amherst, 90-81. SJU lost in Philly, 83-78.
La Salle. We lost in Amherst, 78-77. SJU won at Gola, 71-59.
More on SJU later.
Luis participated in shootaround last night, so maybe he'll be good enough to go on Saturday.
Noah - not so sure. We'll see.
If Frank is going to get this team back on track, Saturday would be a good time.

If you've never been to Hawk Hill and are in the Philly area I strongly recommend it. Great place to catch a game.
This SJU team is sneaky talented and it seems like Billy Lange may finally realize his job is on the line. Team appears to be making strides. By the same token, they've continued to disappoint and if he doesn't show major improvement this will probably be the last time we see them under Lange.

Billy Lange is finally molding his team together and no doubt it'll be a tough one. We need a UMass fan to stop the mascot from flapping his wings, that will definitely ruin St. Joe's mojo.

Alright, I've finally turned the page from that VCU loss and am looking forward to St Joes. Somebody convince me that we're going to go into Philly and win this one. It's a tough back end of a two game road trip, with a lot of travel. I'm assuming they went to Richmond and then back to Amherst, and will travel south again for Philly. That's a lot of travel and not a lot of practice.

I haven’t seen St Joe’s in action, but they did lose by double digits their first 4 conference games before the back to back wins over two other non bye teams. Looks like they haven’t beaten a team with a winning record. They are due for a loss.
But, who knows how we respond to that final 24 minutes. Maybe we play like the first 16, none of us know with this team.

Funny you bring me into this because i did have a mini altercation in 1990 with their mascot. I was threatened with a ban but since i was the first face painter in the Cage that year they decided to look the other way.. I havent matured all that much.. A little higher mathematics here suggests that steve is in his lower 50's, a few decades higher than I might have guessed.stevemaz wrote: Thu Jan 19, 2023 8:18 am Funny you bring me into this because i did have a mini altercation in 1990 with their mascot. St Joes has some talented guys but have been very bad under Lange. Considering they won the last 2 games convincingly it would signal they’ve turned a corner.
If UMass comes out like they did against VCU, except keep Wildens out of foul trouble, they should be in good shape. If they come out slow like GW, I could see them getting beat by double digits.
I think it’s critical they get off to a good start.

@MLBergman_
UMass G Noah Fernandes (ankle) was limited at practice and is questionable for Saturday's game at Saint Joseph's.
G RJ Luis (wrist) was a full participant and will be good to go.

Coach seems to like where the team is at right now. Maybe this is the start of this group coming together and stringing together some wins.
Even though the blowout at VCU was ugly, it's true that they looked good vs URI and that first half at VCU, they looked cohesive and locked in. It just got away from them so quickly, partly because they couldn't buy a bucket and partly because he had the wrong guys in the game. If they don't let that embarrassment get them too down and can stick with the program, good things can happen.
I've been pretty negative lately, but I haven't jumped ship. Road wins are TOUGH, but if they can scrape together a win on Saturday, maybe it's the beginning of good things.
https://twitter.com/MLBergman_/status/1 ... 71541?s=19I am happy with where we're at as a team now

Frank needs to apply some deodorant right now and get everyone off the ledge.

Taking a quick look at St. Joes stats proved interesting. Around 45% of their total shots are from beyond the arc. That's got to be near the top in all of college BB. Reynolds (17.3) and Brown (14.0) take more than 50% of their shots from 3 and hit at 38% and 45%. That's the #1 priority on D.
