Game 9, 2020-21: Davidson (1/24)
Re: Game 9, 2020-21: Davidson (1/24)
Missed basically the 3rd qtr, but at halftime I said to myself, Davidson will adjust and change this game. We had no answer, again

McKillop out coaches every other coach in the league except maybe one, and MM has consistently been terrible throughout his 4 years. To out-coach Mckillop in the 1st half is an improvement for MM.
If Grady doesn’t hit those 2 great shots and Tre plays his normal game in the 2nd half UMass wins. Clearly we’re not at Davidson’s level yet, but we were the better team for most of the game against the squad that ran us off the floor last year.

The mins difference between Carl and TJ will be interesting. Also I think Dibaji only had 3 fouls?? Even if he had 4 you play him when it was close.. He was the only guy that could guard Grady.. The guys put out a great effort.. MM didnt help them

This team needs to learn how to play with lead.

The difference is you dont really have a sub for RG3.. TJ could and should have played more than Carl..TruBluMaroon wrote: Sun Jan 24, 2021 2:09 pmWith exactly the same final stat line as RDIII, and being a half foot smaller gives more value to his rebounds vs RDIII....depending on freshman means accepting inconsistencies...DanaDingle3 wrote: Sun Jan 24, 2021 1:45 pmCarl's the worst player on the floor, but McCall can't take his binky out. It's mystifying.TheInsider wrote: Sun Jan 24, 2021 1:26 pm JG takes a shoulder in the chin... no call.. did I miss why Carl is playing over TJ??

This is an easy one. When Carl's hot, you play him more minutes. When TJ's hot, you play him more minutes. If they're both hot, you split the minutes and we all celebrate with an easy 20-point win. They're basically interchangeable players with similar skill sets. Today was as easy a decision as you'll see, and McCall just got it wrong.TheInsider wrote: Sun Jan 24, 2021 2:10 pm The mins difference between Carl and TJ will be interesting

Yes sir.
Re: Game 9, 2020-21: Davidson (1/24)
That was a rough second half. Was a little worried we we up only five at the half with Grady not scoring. We weren’t turning the ball over and plus pretty good d that first half that’s how we got the lead. Second half we weren’t as good on D and offensively we were a mess. We are fairly limited at that end — especially against a zone. If Tre isn’t his normal Tre we don’t really score.

Inside frontcourt help needs to be a priority this recruiting cycle. Not just height, but a solid frontcourt big to help Tre

Carl - 36mins 5 points ... TJ - 22 mins 16 points.. And maybe Dibaji was hurt again?? He was the only guy that could guard Grady and MM left him on the bench with only 3 fouls.

This is our worst coached team....since our last coach.
Love the enthusiasm and that he will actually speak on the postgame radio show after a loss (unlike DK). But inability to adjust to any changes in-game while continuing to leave Pierre in the game (throwing up another stinker) while leaving hotter players (Weeks) on the bench is inexcusable.

I don’t think coaching was the reason for the loss on umass side. I believe it was fatigue. Tre was exhausted in the second half. We have got to find a way to tread water without him during a game so he can rest a bit. I think the defensive game plan for 3/4 of the game was exceptional.
I would critique coaches for allowing kids body language to reverse when game wasn’t going their way. Awesome performance by TJ. Perfect game on the offensive end.
Carl is a liability when he’s not hitting shots.
Love D from Garcia and Fernandes. We will win these game soon.

add me to the list (all of us?) who love Carl but think he must play less. That was not the case when TJ was struggling early this season, but TJ seems to be back and Carl isn't there. I think TJ is better defensively too; just a little quicker. Carl is stronger, which should translate into better rebounding, but you lose very little there also in going to TJ. Carl got 1 made FG, a 3, but made when down double digits and seconds left in the game. His 3% has been awful and if you take away meaningless makes like that it's notably worse.
ESPN puts up a game flow chart (https://www.espn.com/mens-college-baske ... =401260626), which caught my eye today because you see Davidson, after a slow start, going linear all game while UMass goes scoreless in 5 intervals. It's bound to happen some, but 5 times in a game will be fatal.
Team seemed to give up when Tre got hurt, just hope he is OK.
On to another very tough one at VCU.
