Whip Gone?
Re: Whip Gone?
Many former chancellors at UMass have said that we need FBS football. They are right & I love the way people on this board keep pissing and moaning that we went to FBS.
I have an idea: let’s drop the sport or go back to FCS.
We went FBS because it was the right thing to do. Major national universities play at the FBS level, not in the NAIA. Whether we ever make a bowl or not, who knows. Why does anyone care how much is spent or subsidized? Who cares except for the writers at USA Today?
And there is a correlation between FBS football and national exposure for applications. I dare someone to prove that there isn’t. Show the reasoning like briefing a case in law school.

Chill out. I don't think most are disputing that upgrading to FBS was a reasonable decision (and I think most on here agree it should have even been done much much earlier), just that it isn't necessarily clear it has a causation effect with regard to applications numbers.

Re: Whip Gone?
This article mentions how applications go up following "success" on the field; key word being "success"
https://www.forbes.com/sites/hbsworking ... f795e16e96
Not sure this applies to UMass, but I'm sure the concept covered in this article is part of that "light at the end of the tunnel" that UMass is chasing wrt FBS football.
Also, f**k BC.

Re: Whip Gone?
How about stronger and stronger US News and World Report rankings for starters? And applying does not mean attending. It is ALL about the Common App and h.s. students applying to many more colleges than when each college had its own application. This phenomenon alone explains why so many 'prestige colleges' only accept 6-8% of applicants - it is easy to send the application to "H", "Y", etc. as a 'why not?' to shut up hovering parents.ZooMass84 wrote: Sat Nov 24, 2018 8:24 pmOut is state applications have doubled in the last few years or so, (to coincide with going FBS) yet you maintain one has nothing to do with other. I do love how you continue to fabricate that the increase in applications to attend UMass is related to moving up to FBS. I’m not going to waste my time discussing why out of state applications are up, but can assure you it has little or nothing to do with FBS football. I want UMass to succeed in FBS and hope they hire the right coach and invest the proper resources to make it happen.

I have no connection to the athletic department or boosters, but wow, that article is interesting. No need to answer the question I posed. It just shocked me a bit. I assumed you were referring rumors about the Lou Roe and hoops coaches under DK. But, no need to bring that back up again.
Re: Whip Gone?
Out of state applications have increased because the university is aggressively marketing itself outside of Massachusetts to attract students who pay a much higher tuition. This is part of the school’s strategy. Please show me your evidence that FBS football has made a difference.ZooMass84 wrote: Sat Nov 24, 2018 8:24 pmOut is state applications have doubled in the last few years or so, (to coincide with going FBS) yet you maintain one has nothing to do with other. Re: Whip Gone?
It’s actually a combination of both according to releases from the school itself. The increased exposure of the school due to FBS (even though we are not winning) as well as a concerted effort to attract out of state applicants has increased the overall number of applications. The FBS numbers are tied to the media advertising numbers they use for example the game against ND a few years ago. The financial standing of many as well as the reputation of the university within the state has also led to increased application rates-especially from talented students.78 wrote: Sun Nov 25, 2018 10:10 amOut of state applications have increased because the university is aggressively marketing itself outside of Massachusetts to attract students who pay a much higher tuition. This pisses me off because Bamford is getting a pass from the local media and not answering questions to the UMass community on why he and UMass have parted ways with Whip. Was Whip fired? Did he voluntarily step down? What is his separation package? Nothing but a small press release with no follow on actions. Whip is one the highest paid state employees and there should be total openness on why he isn't the coach anymore and what are Bamford's next steps. What is the salary range that Bamford is offering (the Charlotte AD is open about that). I hope Bamford answers these questions next week!
I will request a FOIA on this if the local media or Bamford doesn't start answering questions soon.

Re: Whip Gone?
They said it was a mutual agreement to move on. So, no Whip wasn’t technically fired. But, he didn’t volunteer to step down, either. I don’t think you will get the level of transparency you are looking for from Bamford. My guess is that all of the details about pay, etc. will come out after the search has been completed, like he did with McCall and Carvel. In both of those hires and I think the soccer coach, he gave a story about the process and discussions after the fact. The separation package will be public information.dennisdent wrote: Sun Nov 25, 2018 11:03 am https://www.charlotteobserver.com/sport ... 90420.html (thanks UMass football blog)

Re: Whip Gone?
If Whip is being paid off with private funds, guess they can be vague on his departure. If they use public money to pay him off, I hope Bamford is transparent. The Boston Globe will be all over this if Bamford isn't out front soon. This could be more bad press that the football program doesn't need during this very important time in the history of UMass football.minutefanjsf wrote: Sun Nov 25, 2018 11:21 amThey said it was a mutual agreement to move on. I’m missing something. Whip was fired for all intents and purposes. He is going to stay on as a consultant in name only to get an extra year towards his pension. Why is the Globe going to be all over this?dennisdent wrote: Sun Nov 25, 2018 11:51 amIf Whip is being paid off with private funds, guess they can be vague on his departure. Re: Whip Gone?
Where did you find that he is staying on for additional year as a consultant? Where did it say he was fired, or is that your view?
