Sounds like Cale Makar is going back for another season at UMass. That's ok -- he's doing what's best for his development, and the Avs are going to be just fine.
Certainly nothing official about it... but here's hoping.

Just for yucks, I Googled "UMass Hockey Recruits", and "College hockey college recruits 2018-2019" to see if we have any new recruits for 2018-2019 season. Only two thus far.

Only two. thus far:

Kolby Vegara (this old geezer kept miss spelling his name; don't know why :D ). He's a 20 y.o. RD with two season with the Phil. Rebels in the NAHL. You can Google his name for more info.

Flip Lindberg, a keeper who played with TUTO Jr. of the Fin Jr. A.

I suspect Gregg Carvel is still recruiting. I don't know how many scholarships he has to offer.

Carvel was on a podcast "From the Bleachers." Worth the listen IMO. He mentions a couple of things of note: 1) He said the plan when Makar initially came here was to give him 2 good years so he could "be the next Charlie McAvoy" and be over-developed by the time he makes the jump to the NHL. Nothing finalized between Makar and the Avs re: next season, but trusts that whatever decision Makar/Colorado makes will be the right one for his development and neither decision would surprise him (leaving vs staying). I think he'll be back.

2nd point was only a little snippet but he said they've got TWO defensemen coming in next season. One would be Vegara, mentioned above, not sure who the other is though.

We have Anthony Del Gaizo coming in. He's the leading scorer in the USHL. There are more but I can't recall who they are. I's sure the more avid hockey guys can fill us in.

^ I am not a "more avid hockey guy", but I remember looking at this site a while ago:

http://collegehockeyinc.com/commitments.php

It now lists 19 (!) commitments that we have, with nine scheduled for this fall.

Since this past roster shows only one senior, I'll take pucks over hoops in the office pool for most departures.

Yea I'm really interested to see how the recruiting class for this coming fall shakes out, in particular on the blue line. Sounds like Farmer, Del Gaizo and Vergara are all coming in. Even with Horton leaving, if Makar and Ferraro stay that would leave us with:

Makar
Ferraro
Chukarov
McLaughlin
Couturier
Torpstrom
Del Gaizo
Farmer
Vergara

My guess is at least one current d-man leaves (Torpstrom? Didn't play much - or Chukarov? NHL pick who hasn't been getting prime minutes or power play time here under Carvel). Then there is Gianfranco Cassaro, who I believe was originally slated to come this fall as well but I'm guessing might be pushed back now. Colin Felix is another one that age-wise would probably be coming this year, but I'm not 100% sure he's even still coming at all.

As far as the forwards, there's Anthony Del Gaizo and Khristian Acosta coming, who were both pretty big scorers in the USHL. Del Gaizo as it has already been noted is currently leading the USHL in scoring. Then there are several guys who could come this year or next - namely Jeremy Davidson, Bobby Trivigno, and Marko Reifenberger. Bobby Kaiser is another USHL commit, and given his age seems like he should be coming this year.

All in all, still a lot of news to come in terms of departures and actual arrival dates for some of these players.

And just for clarity on my last post, in case some don't know, we have both Del Gaizo brothers committed. Marc is a defenseman and Anthony is a forward. Also, as far as tracking recruits goes, there's a guy named Chris Heisenberg who keeps a google doc spreadsheet going and is pretty on top of things. Link is:

Are any of the incoming freshman going to be NHL draftees? Not expecting a top 4 pick......just wondering? With 13 Frosh this year, I'm guessing will go quality over quantity. Also the draw of playing with Makar will be a one year thing probably...

I'm not very familiar with how the NHL entry draft works, but I think that won't be known for sure until June 22–23.
