Doug Grutchfield

This thread starts out with me driving by The Daily Bagel in Leominster a couple of days ago. Lorenzo was with me while I was doing a few errands near there. A couple of big store windows were boarded up, looking like someone might have driven into The Daily Bagel, so I google searched it and found...

Owner Joe Costa and I have chatted many times re: sports, including UM and his soccer history from Italy to Fitchburg and UMaine.

An additional search led to a piece on the Fitchburg Athletics HOF. Joe was elected to it last year and we had talked about it...
The write-ups got into Doug Grutchfield...

Found more...

SM - Thanks for the S&E article. Many memories there for me:

1. Jack Conway - mentioned as FHS AD in the early 70's - was a qb for UMass while I was an undergrad
2. Peter Stephens - mentioned as an FHS HOF member - was my FHS classmate
3. Pamela Kirousis - mentioned as the daughter of a FHS HOF member - is the spouse of my baseball teammate

I could go on for quite a while about Grutch, but i have done that before in long ago threads. I hope that current UMass generations understand how really, really good he was.
"Jack didn’t have any envy in him," Calipari said. "He was the greatest coach to ever coach here."

When I enrolled at UMass a million years ago, Doug Grutchfield was the all-time leading scorer until Clarence Hill surpassed him in 1966. Five years later, Julius Erving surpassed Hill by a point (in just two years of varsity ball).
