Game 16 (2017-18): Union

Post by Marshmont_63 » Sat Dec 09, 2017 12:47 am

We play Union again on the road this weekend. They'll be looking for revenge, so we better bring our A-game.

Union is 9-3-1 since playing UMass. Both schools have similar PWR. Hope UMass can go into the Christmas break on a positive note.

We win, 2-1. From my point of view, best game they have played all season. Totally stifled Union. The win puts UMass at 22 in the Pairwise rankings and only 3 Hockey East teams are ranked higher. There are still going to be down times this year, but this team is so far ahead of where I thought it would be at this point in year 2 of the Carvel era. Great way to head into the break!

Why do we place Union twice, and both times on the road no less?

Union helped us out with a last minute unexpected schedule opening. They might not do that again. But great game.

Big win. Congrats to the team. Carvell seems to be a transformational coach. UMASS is lucky to have him.

Biggest difference in this team, after 2 beat downs we came back both times and won our next game. Love the direction that this program is headed.

Correct me if I'm wrong but to all the avid hockey fans is Cale Maker underperforming? Think he only has 1 goal and 8 assists . . i know he's a defenseman so I'm sure he contributes in a lot of other ways and if so that is encouraging since he should have a "breakout game" soon!

Makar is under performing in the sense that he has not scored a lot of points, but overall he is playing extremely well. He really does a great job on both the power play and penalty kill and his passing and skating skills are really strong. If I had to fault him, I would say he might be trying to hard to score goals. In my opinion, the top defenseman so far this year has been Mario Ferraro. He has played incredibly well.

Cale Makar's presence alone is making everyone on the ice better, and that is a major benefit to this team. The numbers aren't there quite yet, but they will come.

IMHO, Makar does a great job setting his teammates up for success.

I thought that's kind of what I said in my post, but maybe I didn't...
