This game is going to hit over 60 total fouls...how can you expect teams to play basketball in those conditions??

Lou usually visits family around this time of the year. He's not allowed to coach, so I think it's cool.
Derek is what he is. Any coach we run into who has previously coached against him is going to have the advantage. DK does a good job recruiting and respectfully running the program, but he's just not a cerebral dude when it comes to coaching.
Re: Game 14, 2016-17: St. Bonaventure (12/30)
Is it, 1. Our guys get out worker and weaker coaching? Or 2. Their players are that much more talented? I can't remember the Bonnies ever getting a recruit with more than 2 stars. I know about the star ratings but still nobody else was after those players. Perhaps its the number 1, reason.
Re: Game 14, 2016-17: St. Bonaventure (12/30)
Jaylen Adams is fucking ridiculous, we threw 1, 2, 3 guys at him and the only way we could slow him down today was to get him in foul trouble by going at him.
Time to re-set my expectations, this UMass team is a train-wreck in the half-court, still. They can't shoot the ball and they can't space it so getting anything in the paint is a struggle and results in the huge number of turnovers.

The talent upgrade, DK's very modest improvement in coaching, and a weak OOC schedule combined to give us a nice 10-3 record. I have enjoyed it. But now conference play has arrived and we can probably expect a return to form.

Our offense has been a trainwreck about 80% of the time for the last 8 or so years... we tend to struggle against teams with similar talent.. the real tell will be if this team can progress as the A10 season goes on.
Re: Game 14, 2016-17: St. Bonaventure (12/30)
Welp that was a rough one. We were outclassed across the board and weren't good enough on either end. Not the end of the world certainly but outside of a short first half stretch, SBU was in complete control.
That backcourt is a clear step up from any we have played this year and it showed. They are so damn efficient -- Adams and Mobley had 52 points on 28 shots vs. DJ and Pip with 13 points on 15 shots.
More disappointed with the defense overall though -- even if we played well offensively it's hard to win when you put a team on the line almost 40 times and when you need to score 90 to come out on top. Hoping the short turnaround has something to do with this, but it was discouraging.
Anywho, moving on to the next one. Hopefully some lessons are learned and the players get a little rest and then back to work. Not going to fret or jump off anything tall. A nice cold beer sounds inviting though. Goodbye 2016.

What can they do offensively with what they have? They have zero spacing because teams don't need to fear the 3pt shot. Kellogg did a piss poor job of getting players that can shoot the ball, which seems to be the case most every year under DK.TheInsider wrote:the real tell will be if this team can progress as the A10 season goes on.

As I said before the game we cannot underestimate the Bonnies. Why do we have to get into a scuffle in the game and get a player kicked out? Shame for this kind of game with the best attendance of the season.

Are people forgetting the first half of the game?
Yes it ended down 8, but we played a great offensive set loaded with ball screen and rolls. We only took seven threes, I believe. Sure we fell apart in the second half and started taking errant 3PA's, but that's because we got down early, Adams was hot, and we got into panic mode.
It's not like we lost this game by 30. It was a 12 point loss against an offensive explosive team where they made 5 more FT's then we even attempted.
Am I happy with a loss? Of course not, but I'm not jumping ship on this team yet. You all want to talk about "typical UMass basketball letting us down when we think they're back" when in reality this is a fanbase that is the perfect example of "we started 10-3, lost our conference opener at home and I'm going to totally bash our coach, effort, and 90% of the team again".

Schmidt does a great job, but Coach Kellogg seemed to make it easy by going with the obvious press. With 8 days to prepare the Bonnies and such talented guards, this was bound to fail. Throw in many defensive mistakes, several many needless turnovers and no breaks on the calls (just once I'd like to see a game with no fouls against Holloway just for being big) and you get the kind of game that will keep the seats empty. No pressure from the scoreboard on Bonnies for most of the game, so easy for them. I wonder how Schmidt gets his team to shoot something like 85% on free throws every time we play. Andoh came in shooting 63% and goes 6 for 6.
got a few days to prep for the next one. use them wisely. sure hope Hines is OK. Baldwin looks better without the mask in more ways than 1

Very true! Schmidt's teams are always well prepared. DK has recruited some talent, but he's not much of a coach.Almontis wrote:Credit to Bona -- they were more aggressive, disciplined, & executed better. Schmidt does good work up there
On offense, we ran the pick & roll with Holloway, but mostly it was space the floor and have one of our guards try beat his man on the dribble. Result was too many off balanced shots or turnovers.
So, why are we starting Pipkins who has trouble shooting the 3 as a shooting guard with Deeky running the point. The Bonnie guards were too good for Pipkins to trap and steal the ball from. We got nothing from him.

That wasn't Dayton we just played.. Bona is not very good and has the worst defense in the league.. it was what they usually do when you get the public finally to a game.. they shit the bed

Bonnies will win a bunch of games, that's probably the best backcourt in the league. Maybe Dayton as good.
We came out timid and cold in both halves, and their guards are much better than ours at making shots.
