Game 23, 2013-14: at Rhode Island
The turnovers hurt UMass in the first half and the missed free throws and inability to hit 3's hurt them all game long. Chaz allowed a lot of penetration, but the defense was actually decent for the most part, Matthews and Munford got hot in the 2nd half and were hitting their shots. UMass out-rebounded URI and I thought the energy was where it needed to be. I was really surprised UMass didn't press more.
URI is a streaky team that can play well when they're hot. They only lost to SLU by 1 at home, so just getting a win at their place is a good thing.

Dude that was so weird. He was screaming at the UMass bench and holding up his stupid signs the entire game. He doesn't even cheer for URI, he just throws negative energy at the opponent the entire game.PTrainXL wrote:What a game
Who is the bald guy who is the 'daddy' of uri that was weird- serious energy in that building
Pretty embarassing for a grown man. Dude needs to get a life.
I love Put, and I know he makes a lot of dumb plays, but, really ,you could have an entire highlight film with just him on it. Great win. Any win on the road is tough.
The guy under the basket near the Umass bench, who looked liked Uncle Festus from the Adams family, was about as obnoxious as you get.

I'm going to assume you're joking about that, but it was definitely a big play and helped seal the win for us today. Putney is maddeningly inconsistent, but he's consistent in his inconsistencies if that makes sense.InnervisionsUMASS wrote:That was quite a game. I was proud to see so much maroon and white in attendance and even more proud of the effort of the students who went. They were loud the whole game.
The Putney block is clearly the play of the year not only for UMASS, but for all of college basketball. No doubt, no question, Play. Of. The. Year.
I don't like seeing him dribble the ball, make cross court passes, or attempt layups from inside of 5 feet.
I like seeing him pull up from 3 without hesitating (most of his awful misses seem to come when he thinks about whether or not to shoot the three), dunk the ball and drive when he's got space to the basket.
URI committed 3 fouls towards the end of the game to stop the clock, UMass went 5-6. So prior to those fouls UMass had been 14-23 from the line (2 fewer attempts) and the team fouls would've been even at 19.chuff wrote:However, ultimately we did shoot a 4 more free throws, and ended up tied in number made. Bottom line: guards scoring couldn't overcome defense and offense advantage by us around the rim.

Stop waiting for UMass to do something big and help UMass do something big. - Shades

Not joking at all.

With 40 seconds left PootKnee had an absolutely sick block to protect a 3pt lead.xlgman wrote:DVR extended time didn't work for some reason so I missed the last 5:00 minutes. When I came on the board, I saw the thread was only 20 pages long so I knew we'd won.
Scottie - please post the final 5 or 6 minutes if you have it.
Can anyone summarize the last 5:00 minute stretch?
Gotta admit I wasn't sure we were going to pull that one out. Very impressed with Matthews and Munford. Rhody played tough and aggressive. Cady got schooled by E.C.
With 31 seconds left Chazz made both FTs to get it to 5pts
With 19 seconds left your guy Matthews clanked a 3ptr
With 13 sec left my guy Trey locked it up with 2 made FTs
Game, set, match!

It's definitely a top 3 play of the season for us...for all of college basketball? C'mon man.InnervisionsUMASS wrote:UMassbball14 wrote:

Just off the top of my head, Arkansas tip slam that beat Kentucky makes Putney's dunk look like the equivalent of any other buzzer win, at best, for example.
