Sad thing is there are people on this board that can't stand Sarandis, and still feel he doesn't do enough to promote UMass hoops.

I can't stand him because he's a jackass.

Ted questioned Lappas as to why he would accept a clause in his current restructured contract tied to attendance. Lappas bascially said he'd make it happen - lots of good young kids, new recruits, his system....you know the rest, no doubt....
Ted said he would love to see UMass hoops return to its prominance and that there would be nothing better than getting UMass vs BC games at the Fleece Center and that they should do double headers and include maybe HC, PC, URI, BC, etc...

Bruiser just had nice things to say about everyone: Craig Smith (worked w/him on the jr Olympic team last year I think?), Skinner, Cal, Innervisions, etc.

Can anyone tell me why Ted is a jackass?

Because he's a no talent BC shill? Seriously, I had the misfortune of listening to him broadcast a BC tournament game on a commute home when he uttered this gem, "and we're all tied up 53-53" Oh really Ted? I thought it was tied at 53-51. He's just plain awful.

Ok - I see where you're coming from. When you just happen to flip down the dial and catch a BC game on you'd want to hear him say, "and we're all tied up 53-53. Steve Lappas is still coach at UMass. UMass really sucks this year because of Steve Lappas. Umass should fire Steve Lappas. Blah blah blah Steve Lappas....."

That was possibly the worst reason I've ever heard to hate the way someone announces games. I've heard a hell of a lot worse from other announcers. I think his radio show is crap, but I have no problem with the way he does games.

Why I hate Ted

Post by coolidge 13 » Tue Apr 06, 2004 8:05 am

I hate Ted Sarandis because he is incapable of understanding people who have different viewpoints than him. He verbally abuses anyone who wants to keep Fenway Park. Six years ago he would say things like "well its mid April and there's only 25,000 people at Fenway, and Camden Yards is sold out every game--this is why we need a new stadium". Of course he didn't use this line very much last year, when tickets at Camden Yards or Jacobs Field are plentiful and the Sox sell out nearly every game. He also denies the right of any Sox fan to say they like Fenway unless they've been to the new retro parks (I've been to a couple of them, but why the hell does someone need to go to ballparks in other cities to decide if they like the one in their city?). Its not that I reject that people have the right to want a new Fenway, but Sarandis shuts down dissent on past or persent pet topics of his as patently absurd as: a new retractable dome stadium for the Sox, a new Patriots stadium (in which UMass would also play its games after goind D I) in South Boston, and that the 2001-2002 BC non-conference basketball schedule was the toughest in the history of New England college basketball.

My recommendation is to only call Ted when he has a sportswriter on from some second rate Massachusetts daily--although no one has ever heard of these reporters, they seem to be the only people on the planet with divergent viewpoints who Ted respects, and they will often cut in to defend callers making rational arguments who are in the midst of being browbeaten by Ted.

Coolidge did a good job. It's great backing him in a corner when he's wrong and trying to figure out which tactic he's going to use to try to save face. Usually it's screaming the same irrelevant question over and over until he pulls the plug on the call and then talking shit about you for 2 minutes.

He's a sports talk radio host. He's 3/4 of the way to full on douche by that fact alone.

Coolidge - sounds like you've listened to the show, so I definately understand where you're coming from. I think that what makes a successful talk show host (ie Howard Stern, Rush Limbaugh, Dr. Laura, Ted Sarandis) is to have an opinion, popular or not, and stick to it. When Sarandis is getting aggravated either by a caller who argues against him, or a caller who is totally clueless, its pretty funny listening to him get rattled. It's all just entertainment and its a lot better than listening to the same crap on FM radio (I think I'm getting old). Anyway - the guy will mention UMass hoops more than anyone else I know of in the Boston media, so I have to give him credit - and I hate BC.
