Game 1: Rider
Game 1: Rider
Time to get it started.
Rider has their own D3 tuneup this weekend against The College of New Jersey.
Last season, they peaked early, shocking host Mississippi State by dealing them a 14-point loss in their opener. Then they went 16-16 the rest of the way, and 9-9 in the MAAC.
Their top-returning scorer is Justin Robinson, who averaged 13.3 ppg, and 45% from 3.
Their 2010-11 outlook:

38 of 72 points from the field came in the paint last night. That's 53%. So it would seem we have an inside game, if not a post up game. Rider has 2 guys 6'7, 1 6'8. Not much after that for size with experience. Gurley, DT, Riley, Sam C, Putney, Vinson, Sean C and Bailey all scored in the paint. Take it to them inside, get them in foul trouble, loosen up on the double teaming.
Holy Cow, Joe, don't make me actually refer to data! My reference to pounding it into the paint was to a specific play, passing the ball from the perimeter to the interior, where the player shoots it. I missed the first six minutes of the game, but for the rest of the time, I didn't see anyone score that way except Vinson. I did see the big guys put back some rebounds and I did see perimeter guys get themselves to the hoop, but I didn't see it the ball successfully "pounded inside" except to Vinson.

Most of the points that came inside on Thursday were from driving the ball into the paint with either that player finishing himself, dishing off to another or a put back after a missed shot. They didn't look to post many times and have the ball delivered from the outside.
However, I do agree that TV has some serious moves down there, very quick feet and swift moves. He's not your notmal back to the basket player. He doesn't really back guys down, but he has many post moves with his best being a McHale-like up and under move. He has a nice touch around the rim with little hooks and can finish with either hand. This is where TV is going make his mark as a star in the next 3 years. He can work the block with these posts. He can also turn and face the basket from the post or just outside the post and take his man to the hoop with either hand. TV uses the glass from various ranges very well. Add all that to being able to hit shots from various ranges and take guys off the dribble and he is going be absolute force by his senior year. Expect big things out of him by the time they get into A10 play.

Without trying to hijack the Rider thread into a DDM discussion, Roadtrip is accurately describing the best case scenario for the DDM offense. Being concerned that the ball was not pounded into the paint to a big man with his back to the basket is like being concerned that the Patriots won't take as many deep shots down the field without Moss, or don't have a traditionally effective bruising running game. They'll have success with a short/medim passing game spreading the football around, and we'll have success (hopefully) with the DDM. There are many ways to skin a cat (or a Bronco), and for the foreseeable future we'll be doing it with 6'7"-6'9" athletic, skinny, face up big men, and (hopefully) 6'9" + weak side athletes who can dunk. These are the guys we've recruited and are targeting to recruit to play in the DDM rather than back-to-the-basket types.Roadtrip wrote:38 of 72 points from the field came in the paint last night.
