I agree. However, if it provides some much needed recognition east of Worcester and large donations I won't compalin.

And what if the prof that UB2 mentioned, by virtue of winning the Nobel prize and increased international profile were to choose to leave UMASS for the private sector? Would you feel betrayed, or is that sentiment reserved for coaches?

I don't see what the two have in common. They are not mutually exclusive and one has no effect on the other. Both are good things and are positives for the university. One of my dreams is to have my grandson be the first Rhodes Scholar from UMass. Doesn't mean he can't enjoy a basketball game i.e. Duke.

Would this be something like giving Richard Nixon a Nobel Peace Prize for Ping Pong Diplomacy?

The system has had that before and will have that again. I hope the same rings true for our specific basketball program...

The point I was trying to make (or the conundrum I was trying to raise) is that we seem to expect a loyalty to the school from coaches, but not faculty members. If a well know professor leaves UMASS for the private sector, no one bats an eyelash, but if a coach leaves for professional sports (i.e. The private sector) there are hard feeling from the university he leaves (and this is not unique to UMASS).

Could it be because nobody has an emotional attachment to the professor and his output? Or very few. There probably are some people who get pissed off in that situation, like maybe colleagues and students of the prof.

He will go to the NBA at some point, but I think he'll win an NCAA championship before he does. His legacy will be defined by his failure to win an NCAA championship if he leaves before he does.

If the story is true about the possible Calapari maneuverings, it's nauseating.

does anyone know if this relationship b/w Cal and Wesley started near the end of Cal's tenure at Umass or in NJ or when he went to Memphis?

I'll believe it when I see him on the sidelines at Rupp Arena next season. All of these big time college coaches are such sleezeballs now.
