Amherst College exhibition game?

Post by MikeUMA » Thu Mar 22, 2007 12:40 pm

So the Lord Jeffs are D3 champs now, and it got me thinking: would scheduling them for an exhibition game in November be a good idea?

We played D2 Bridgeport this past Nov. Other D1 schools have played D3s or NAIAs in their exhibitions. I don't see anything wrong with it in pre-season tune up time. And the Jeffs are obviously an excellent D3 team.

A cross-town matchup would surely generate more ticket sales than some other lower-tiered team that nobody cares about.

Back when, Bruiser sais he would consider a request to go to AC to scrimmage if their veteran coach approached us. He said we had nothing to gain by approaching them.
"Jack didn’t have any envy in him," Calipari said. "He was the greatest coach to ever coach here."

Why not?
It is only an exhibition so UMASS has nothing to lose.

Maybe after seeing UMASS at the Mullins some the the Amherst fans would return during the regular season. Good way to build up the local fan base. I don't really see any downside.

I'm definitely for it. Every year, preseason there should be an exhibition game between the two. Nice way to bring in local fans from both schools, and develop a little rivalry, even though the games won't mean much. Play it in the Mullins Center. I am sure that game would get a solid turnout.

I like the idea, but would Amherst College go for it? Many D2 schools offer athletic scholarships while D3 allows none, right?

I think its a great idea. Its a great thing for the Amherst kids, its a good crowd-getter, its against a quality team...

When I was growing up in Iowa, we had D-III teams playing D-I teams all the time in exhibition. Northern Iowa, Iowa, Iowa State and Drake ALL played a D-III exhibition game against a team from Iowa every year.

It was a great experience for us.

It is a great idea, and I think we should do it in football too, but I have a feeling that the athletic department would never go for it due to the potential "shame" that could follow if we were to lose to them.

The department would probably be looking more at the big picture on this one. It would not be good for the university to lose to AC at anything, since the university already deals with being perceived as inferior to AC.

I'm Frank Lymon from Amherst, Fawn's fiancé. Actually, we're engaged to be engaged. What's wrong with everyone here?
Screw those elitist bastards. I would rather we scrimmage against Amherst/Pelham High School than those pansies .. the Lord Jeffs. Please
