This is a good take. I’m sure Walfish would have went if he had time and the DHG had money to cover his expenses. Can’t speak to the former, but I’m sure a local newspaper can’t afford to blow their travel budget on a exhibition junket to USVI. Comparing it to the infamous media blackout of 2018 is a bit of a stretch.78 wrote: ↑Thu Aug 22, 2019 5:28 pm I agree it's absolutely not a blackout...if publications wanted to send reporters there they could have. It is true, however, that the program has decided to provide little to no information on the trip. In the long run it won't mean anything, but people who have followed this program closely for 30+ years and would like a few video clips and more info on the games don't necessarily want the coach fired.

It might be a good take... do we know the department would have provided a press pass to the games? Obviously they could have bought a ticket to the game and get in anyways. I am guess I'm glad it never came to that... I can't imagine what this place would be like if we found out Walfish went but he had to buy a ticket to the game.
It's this stuff that makes the whole scenario strange, and as 78 pointed out, it was a conscious decision the program/department made... and no one is calling for MM's head because they've questioned it.

Nice results in the scoring column again! Go UMass!!
Good year to be doing this, with all the Freshmen.
Did we get a game score even?? Or just top five scorers again?

This has become a blip on the radar in this thread, but 6 years ago I went to the US Virgin Islands, and while you are correct that you don't need anything other than a valid drivers licence to get into the USVI, you need to show more than 1, to get back into the US. The 2nd is not limited to a passport, I used a birth certificate. But maybe Carl (or whoever) didn't have that. Wouldn't make a whole lot of sense since this has been on the radar for awhile and it takes 1 day to get a birth certificate. Just my 2 cents.rsox1221 wrote: ↑Wed Aug 21, 2019 7:08 pmI'm a touch confused. This is the US Virgin Islands. You don't need a passport to travel to the US Virgin Islands if you are a US citizen. I don't think that Pierre would have been the one with a "passport issue" as it relates to travel to the USVI. In fact, unless at some point in this trip they plan to go to the British Virgin Islands, no one who is a US citizen should have had any document-related issues for travel. The only player that appears to be a concern for would be Baptiste as a native of Haiti, and he has been in the US for several years.
It looks as though UMass traveled from Bradley to Puerto Rico then St Thomas. There is no need for documentation on that path as a US citizen.
I really want to engage in all the other talk, but I'll just sit back for now.

Team building trip without Carl, who many of us (perhaps all) expect/hope to be a team leader. Might be a good idea, but I wouldn't have thought it desirable.

I sent the stats to a friend who follows BB pretty closely, but not as much of a diehard as most of us. His comment, "Who the hell is CJ Jackson?" Unless I have this wrong, he was the most under the radar of the 7 freshmen and not noted as a prolific scorer.

Sy Chatman's parents and Tre Mitchell's mother went to the USVI, wouldn't be surprised if other player's families did as well.

Maybe they can get us a summary and box score.

Box Score, obviously played a team they overmatched by quite a bit
Tre with 16/5 in 13 minutes
CJ obviously shooting well
Santos with 15/8/8

Re: Virgin Islands, August 2019, exhibition trip
so I tried reading the 15 pages of this thread and need this dumb-ed down:
1. the best player has a travel issue
2. the ad and coach basically want no attention, but its okay we are giving you our last 50 fans coachspeak from the mccall about how each player has been having the most incredible summer.
3. they are playing the USVI equivalent to the Hampshire College

I can't be sure, but if this is the team we play next, our old pal Kit Rhymer starts for them.
