great hire
I voted #10, but #2 made me laugh.
Seriously anyone saying they are concerned because DK hasn't been a head coach can't be dismissed, that is a legit concern. But the fit is perfect with the history, the pedigree, the recruiting. We'll see if he has got the coaching magic soon enough, but to me this beats any retread coach we could have brought in, and it takes a little vision so thanks to the AD. DK could potentially take this program further than an out of town guy, so why not take a shot.

10 - for several reasons:
1) He's an alum and a huge part of the 90's teams that were so successful.
2) Brings instant credibility given his success at Memphis and other stops.
3) Proven track record recruiting excellent players.
4) West. Mass. will be very excited about this hire, hopefully resulting in better attendance.
5) DDM offense fits our current personnel very well.
6) Bringing Wahlberg the originator of the DDM is the icing on the cake.

I gave it a 10, and i would have given it 100 if given the option...I was talking to a buddy of mine during the NIT about how with Ford looking elsewhere, how unbelievably smart it would be to bring in DK, I couldn't ask for more...My opinion is, anyone not loving this move is either too young or needs a head check...GREAT HIRE, BEST THAT COULD HAVE HAPPENNED!!!!

I initally stated in the "Who Should Replace Ford" thread before Ford screwed with us (yeah, umm, I was saying how Ford was staying for sure and would be around for several more years...and I was right a-la LSU and PC...but my crystal ball needs new batteries
) That Kellogg would be an ideal choice. I still believe that.
My only oncern is the fan base and the pressure the University will put on DK. I had the same reluctance about Bruiser, and it came true. To this day I believe Bruiser would have been an outstanding caoch at UMass if he had been afforeded another 2 years. But that's all ancient history now.
We need to allow Derek time to build HIS program. He has a good foundation, but expecting an instant return to the 90s success is improbable and setting him up for failure.
What I like best about this pick is it has the possibility of longevity. Assuming everyone plays their roles - fans show up and SUPPORT the program; DK puts together successful teams; the U stands behind DK - this could be the start of something really special. Something like a John Chaney, preferably without the schizophrenic/psychotic undercurrents.
Having been raised in WMass and going to UMass, I can say that there are positions I would accept at UMass for far less money than I could make elsewhere because I love that area and I love the school. I think - actually I am pretty sure - DK has that same feeling. Not to say he would never ever leave for the right deal, but I truly don't think he views UMass as a stepping stone like so many other coaches have.
