Baseball 2026

Post by MikeUMA » Fri Feb 13, 2026 6:16 pm

UM is picked to finish a distant last in the MAC's pre-season poll, with 13 votes out of the 12-member league, which if I'm not mistaken means our last place prediction was almost completely unanimous among the voters.

WTF?
How much does that program even cost to operate?
Why not just relegate it to club sport level?
Would it be more embarrassing than it already is to just shut the thing down?

Someone remind me: how many scholarships do we provide now? I thought it's like one or two.

Looked up the history. You have to go back a ways to find a .500 season, and even farther to find a winning season.
Overall win percentages
2025 .284
2024 .453
2023 .286
2022 .459

It's sad. And don't we have two head coaches now? Honestly, who has two head coaches?

I was told by somebody who has good contacts that they yanked the 1 scholarship that Baseball used to have. Also, they (Bamford??) are looking at the travel costs for baseball and we may be seeing a team that is "not for long".

It's sad, and I love baseball, but this is where we're at. In order to pay for football and basketball, as well as the NIL dollars needed to attract talent, they need to charge us more money for things like parking and cut sports that are a cash drain like baseball. The odds are stacked against them, but I hope they go out and have a good season. I'll definitely be out there to watch a few games.

I saw an online comment that we are one of 18 D1 teams remaining undefeated.
"Jack didn’t have any envy in him," Calipari said. "He was the greatest coach to ever coach here."

is this really true? what would the point be to have just 1? I know even the best schools (SEC) can only offer a certain amount - I believe 11 or 12 - the rest are partial but there are ways around that as well...academic scholarships, athletic aid, etc. A lot of these bigger schools also split those scholarships - instead of given out 10 full rides they might give out 20 half or 10 half and 20 at 25% or something along those lines.
