Massachusetts or UMass
Massachusetts or UMass
How should our sports teams be referenced? Thought about this while watching men’s soccer today.
Re: Massachusetts or UMass
Option 3: Both can be true.
I say UMass just because it's simpler, but written out or on jerseys I don't mind either way.

Re: Massachusetts or UMass
Both. I happen to really like the Massachusetts on most uniforms, but I'm also happy to UMass (block and script). What I don't like is the big PowerU on the center of a jersey.. hockey has done that before. I like the PowerU on a hat, or at the corner chest of a polo shirt, but that's it.
I would love to see the Dr. J/70s era MASSACHUSETTS on bball uniforms more often, vs the current version.

Hockey has worn Massachusetts exclusively for probably the last two years. The Power U also had a Grey jersey; wasn’t a fan of that.InnervisionsUMASS wrote: Wed Oct 01, 2025 7:29 am Both. The last couple of years of the Leaman era and the Wilson era had Massachusetts on the jerseys, but it was at the bottom of jerseys that were designed to be worn untucked……..to appease a certain player primarily. That player would then on occasion, tuck the shirt in…..

I remember those, the Marquette look. Who was the player who wanted it?TruBluMaroon wrote: Wed Oct 01, 2025 8:58 amHockey has worn Massachusetts exclusively for probably the last two years. Besides Uconn who else does the U-thing? I don't think anyone else does? URI / UVM / UNH sort of does?

Not many, if any at all... which I kinda like. It's pretty unique.
UAlbany is the only other one that comes to mind that regularly does that, though I don't think that rolls off the tongue the same way UMass and UConn do.

Re: Massachusetts or UMass
I think Massachusetts makes sense in any formal or official context, and UMass in any informal or shortened context.
I'd expect fields, courts, ESPN, etc. to say Massachusetts most(?) of the time. And I'd expect regular people to say UMass most of the time. Doesn't necessarily work out that way, but that's what I'd expect based on other schools.
I think the newspapers used to first refer to "Massachusetts" before later using the shorter "UMass" in the same article.
Not dissimilar from other flagships and their recognized abbreviations: North Carolina/UNC, California/Cal, Virginia/UVA, etc.
It's not quite this, but I think of Massachusetts as the more "external" national brand, and UMass is the more "internal" brand for fans, alumni, and people in the region familiar with the school. Can't separate the two. But I do think how they are used is distinctly different.

It was a rare occasion indeed if Jack Leaman used "UMass" on the air or in conversation. The man was all about "Massachusetts," in more ways than one.

It was not so much a desire, more of that was how he was wearing the jersey.Floyd wrote: Wed Oct 01, 2025 9:41 amI remember those, the Marquette look. Before my time TruBlu. I heard he was a fantastic player. Wish I saw him

Re: Massachusetts or UMass
^ I saw him play several times. In my opinion, he was ahead of his time. He would thrive in today's more open and faster paced game. I'm sure he drove Jack nuts more than once. He could take the ball from end to end and that was not Jack's preferred style of play.
