2017 A10 Tournament

Post by MikeUMA » Tue Feb 28, 2017 9:51 am

Tourney starts a week from tomorrow. We're locked into playing on day one. UM hasn't had to play on day one since 2013, and that was back when it was just a 4-day tourney with 12 teams.

We're likely to be no higher than the 12 seed. We have a chance at getting #11, but it would take:
UM winning their last 2 (vs Richmond, at Bona)
SLU losing their last 2 (vs La Salle, at Richmond)
Even if each goes 1-1, SLU owns the tie-breaker.

We could still slip to 13 or 14, depending on what SJU and Duquesne do. We're 4-12 now, they're both 3-13. Their last 2:
SJU vs Rhody, at Duquesne (Sat at 2PM)
Duq at Mason, vs SJU

We own the tie-breaker vs SJU, but not vs Duq. The tie-breaker procedure:

First round games on March 8 are at 6:00 and 8:30, on ASN.

You'd have to think Duq would have a little advantage in having to travel just across town.

Mike you unwittingly summed up the whole season....

We DO NOT own the tie-breaker with Duquesne

^ Nor do we with SLU

SJU looks like they might be the biggest disappointment, having gotten swept by us :)
They were certainly going to have a down year, but the league pre-season poll thought they'd be 9th.

I think the fact that SLU will almost certainly finish ahead of UMass sums it up better and is a true indictment of DK's coaching.

They have a damn good excuse, they lost their 2 best players to injury. What's our excuse?

I'm hoping, that the fact that the tournament is held in Pittsburgh, the home city of Duquesne, we will have flashbacks of our ugliest loss of the year and that will make us hungry. Hungry enough to give it all we got, and make a hell of a run in the A-10 tournament.

Bona losing last night locked up the double-bye teams: Dayton, VCU, Rhody, Richmond

We can still land between 11-14, but likely 12 or 13.

I think tonight's results guarantee us 12 or 13, and it doesn't matter which one it is. SLU has wrapped up 11. We are 4-13, with SJU and Duq. at 3-14. They play each other this weekend. Let's assume we lose and finish 4-14. The winner of SJU/Duq. is 4-14 and the other is 3-15. We play the winner and SLU plays the loser. Even if we win, we get #12 and still play the winner of that game.

Correct. That gives us the 6pm game on Wednesday, which gets picked up by ASN, so at a minimum, streaming is available.
