Game 24, 2013-14: George Mason

Post by Marty Peretz » Sun Feb 09, 2014 8:54 pm

A trap game if there ever was one, the Patriots come into town riding a mighty one game win streak. The win over Duquesne was their first ever in A10 play. So why am I a bit worried?

For a team that's 1-7 (or is it 1-8?) in league, they've had a ton of ridiculously heart breaking losses. The choke job vs us. OT with URI. OT with SLU on the road. A few four and six point losses with GWU, SJU and Fordham. They even apparently played great against VCU before falling by 14 in a game that apparently didn't at all reflect the final outcome (late FT's, etc). So yeah, on paper, they're 1-7 or 1-8 but they are literally a handful of bounced away from being 4-5 or 5-4 and they've only once been beaten badly (to Dayton).

We also have an absolutely huge GW showdown three days later and we're coming off this emotional win vs URI. I'm confident DK will have our guys ready, but it could be a lot closer than some on this board will feel comfortable with...

I won't be there but my tickets have been sold. After 2 straight wins, I'll be disappointed with anything under 7K at the Bill on Wednesday.

Definitely a trap game. And Marty you're totally right about GMU, their record sucks, but they are not bad. Fordham is awful, GMU can compete. Hopefully, we play well at home and the energy of Mullins gives us a double figure game. One less day to prepare than usual as we played Sunday instead of Saturday. Will be interesting how the 2nd game goes against them, we haven't fared well in the 2nd game against teams this year, granted those were on the road.

I have a theory about home and home series. I may be nuts, but I would rather play the first one on the road. If you lose a close one, such as SBU and SJU, and you feel you should have won, you come out fired up in front of your home crowd and play tough.
If we had started at SBU and SJU and won close games, we have the advantage of being home for the next one and that takes some of the fight out of them.

I'm sure there are counterpoints to my theory, but I'm sticking to it.

I"m with fenway and I strongly disagree about the "trap." These seniors have seven regular conference games left in their careers and I doubt any of them will relax regardless of the opponent.

It's a home game and UMass will treat them like they treated Fordham. Their different at home and, imho, this one will be over early so those that have been asking will get to see some of the freshmen.

I think these guys know GMU can play with us after last time. Definitely think that we win this game....carrying on my hope for undefeated at home this season

I also agree with fenway & what swampy said. After missing out last year on the tourney, coupled with the final stretch for the seniors, and also the tight game at GM earlier, I see them coming out strong and ready to play. Finish the regular season on a tidal wave going into league tourney play and peak going to the NCAA's. Time to ramp it up boys!

close in the first per usual.
umass pulls away with a mid second half run.
mason cuts a double digits lead down to 4-6 with 3-4 mins left.
our boys clamp down on d, end up winning by 8-12.

they take care of business at home before the big road game at GW. 3 wins in a row is exactly the momentum they need.

If Umass goes 2-2 in the next 4 (doesn't matter the combination, either they lose to bad teams and beat good ones, or beat bad teams and lose to good ones) and Umass is a lock to make the NCAA tournament in my opinion. Any losses the rest of the way would just be hurting their seed, not their chances.

Of course that's not what we all want. We want the top 4 bye. So I'm hoping for 3-1 or better yet 4-0.

Looks like this will be a streaming-only game. No TV listed on the UM or GMU schedules.

Attendence for GMU?

Post by baseline47 » Mon Feb 10, 2014 12:34 pm

Who knows? I'm hoping there's a good crowd. I bought pair of tickets this morning (Monday); best available was in section G, row 29. Pretty good place to watch a game from.

GMU @ UMass - Should be a good game. GMU is better than their record indicates. We were lucky to get a "W" on their court; I imagine they're looking for a little pay back. On the other hand, they can't sneak up on us.
