Game 36, 2011-12: @ Drexel (NIT Quarters)

Post by MikeUMA » Sat Mar 17, 2012 8:08 pm

I like creating these new threads!

It's been mentioned in the Seton Hall thread that our game has already been set:
Tuesday, 3/20
7 PM Eastern
ESPN

What we don't know yet is who we're playing and where. Tomorrow at 11 AM on ESPN is the Northern Iowa / Drexel game.
If Drexel (the #3 seed in the region) wins, we (the #5 seed) play at Drexel.
If UNI (#7) wins, they will come visit us.

We'll know tomorrow at about 1 PM.

Based on some of the tweets, the team is back in Amherst.

Playing UNI would give us a big advantage. It would be their third long distance road game in 6 days. Add in the extra 24 hours rest, and we could run them out of gas on our home floor. Drexel is on the same schedule as UNI, but will have played every game at home.

I know everyone's thinking it, so i'll say it...boy would it be intriguing if we play Bruiser.

I have no desire to see us play against Bruiser, a man I respect and like, and Kellogg's former coach. I'd much much rather see another game at the Mullins Center.

Playing Bruiser would be tough too because he knows our roster really well. If we played UNI on such short notice, I worry about what we could draw in terms of fans, since the students are off campus. I know people are fired up, buth with 48 hours notice and no students, might it better to have the game at the cage? This is obviously looking ahead, since we don't know who our opponent is, but Northern Iowa isn't a name brand to people in Western Mass and it's unclear to me if we could get more than 4K in the building with such little notice.

You do realize that Bru's last year at UMass was 2001, right?

Yes. He knows our current roster well because he's extremely close with DK, they talk regularly and because he scrimmaged us in the pre-season. No need to get snarky.

So wouldn't that mean that DK knows Bru's roster just as well?

I think we would be hurting our guys if we shifted to the Cage
at this point. The built up home court advantage would be gone. That advantage is knowledge of site lines and where you are on the court as well as what the fans add.

I agree with you guys, but remember they practice in the cage, so they know it well. I think with the game being on ESPN 5k shouldn't b hard.

NIT Quarterfinals? I am sure a good amount would show. Even students. I know my little brother and his friends would be sleeping on my floor Tuesday night if it meant they got to see the game.

And for polling purposes, I am pulling for UNI in this one. I don't want to face Bruiser and the Dragons on their run to show the selection committee what a mistake they made.

In my opinion, this upcoming round could be the easiest. If Mississippi St. played in the CAA they would have gone undefeated...while Seton Hall wouldn't have gone undefeated, they certainly wouldn't have lost more than a couple games. From an athletic standpoint, I feel we're much more athletic than Drexel is. I don't want say this should be an easy road to Madison Square, but I feel pretty good about our chances.
