I'm not too familiar with any of them, and while no one from your list seems like a no-brainer, they all seem like decent options. Huger is probably the one who's the most compelling to me.inthescoop wrote: Wed Jan 06, 2021 12:11 pmWhat about the names that I mentioned, such as Michael Huger?NilesGold wrote: Wed Jan 06, 2021 10:11 am ^ There aren't a lot of coaches in their 40's or 50's who've had success at a lower program, are gettable for UMass, and haven't had their reputation tarnished by failing. Reputation isn't everything, but when you're trying to recruit it can be important.
Becker is on my list, he falls into that "older" category.

John Beilein's last run to the NC begins in Amherst...

Maybe Coach Cal will be available soon. Come back to Massachusetts, Coach. You'll be safer here.

I would go with who I thought they should have hired the first time around and that is Caputo from Miami however I’m bias a bit here as I’m friends with his brother

He would have been hired by now by a different school if he was the guy.UMassfan_19 wrote: Tue Jan 12, 2021 9:11 pm I would go with who I thought they should have hired the first time around and that is Caputo from Miami however I’m bias a bit here as I’m friends with his brother

I don’t necessarily think this is true as I believe he has been told he has the inside track to replace JL.inthescoop wrote: Tue Jan 12, 2021 10:06 pmHe would have been hired by now by a different school if he was the guy.UMassfan_19 wrote: Tue Jan 12, 2021 9:11 pm I would go with who I thought they should have hired the first time around and that is Caputo from Miami however I’m bias a bit here as I’m friends with his brother
Recruiting wise he has been the lead on their success in New England, (Brown, Cross, Joseph etc). I am one who doesn’t believe the coach must have prior HC experience and I was an endorser of him being a serious candidate last time.

It's great to hear from the best poster this board has. I don't want to put you on the spot, but I guess I will. Any chance we could get a world-renowned OFFSeason post with your thoughts on this season and how the immediate future is looking? I'm guessing you aren't particularly interested in sharing since we haven't heard much from you this year, which is well within your right. But I think I speak for the majority of us in saying we'd love to get your opinion on the current state of the program, whenever you might feel up to doing that.TheOFFSeason wrote: Wed Jan 13, 2021 10:32 amI don’t necessarily think this is true as I believe he has been told he has the inside track to replace JL.inthescoop wrote: Tue Jan 12, 2021 10:06 pmHe would have been hired by now by a different school if he was the guy.UMassfan_19 wrote: Tue Jan 12, 2021 9:11 pm I would go with who I thought they should have hired the first time around and that is Caputo from Miami however I’m bias a bit here as I’m friends with his brother

Re: Who would you hire as HC for 2021-22
The overall tenure of MM cannot be seen as successful by even his close friends. As everyone on here is aware there is a lot to being a HC than just the in game decisions. ‘Managing a program’ isn’t different than managing a business in most ways and his decisions (against the advice of at least 1 former assistant) on personnel when he started would’ve put a company out of business after 2 years...personnel decisions were just a part of the problem that lead to the record and direction the program was headed. Fortunately college basketball can’t really go out of business so he was able to reset and so far there have been some positive and not so positive results, however this year is so scrambled that I really can’t say I have a feel just yet. They should win today and have a piece of 1st place in the league which is great but they won’t have played any contenders yet so it is still wait and see.
I will say that in my opinion they still are lacking in basics that are a lot of times taken for granted but all championship teams possess...holding out hope for them to be developed.

Sounds about right. He has the roster, time to see him put it together. I felt like “the basics” were better for most of the URI game, they seemed a lot more focused and in control until they blew the lead. Thanks for the input.TheOFFSeason wrote: Sun Jan 17, 2021 11:44 am The overall tenure of MM cannot be seen as successful by even his close friends. Looks like this thread has been quiet lately. That’s a good thing!
Anyways, didn’t know where to ask this, so I’ll ask here: In the past, was Bill Bayno ever considered a legitimate candidate to becoming the next UMass coach?

I don't recall Bill being in the running for HC at UMass. He has had some personal problems, and unfortunately this appeared very recentlyinthescoop wrote: Mon Feb 08, 2021 10:32 pm Looks like this thread has been quiet lately. That’s a good thing!

All due respect, and I mean that from the bottom of my heart, I'm gonna pass.

Bill has learned a lot about taking care of himself.

Not that I'm advocating for it right now, but I wonder if B Bayno would ever consider coming back here. He's got a lot of experience, first under Cal, then his own program at UNLV, then many years as an NBA assistant. Plus he played here back in the day.
