The schools will need to find a way to control this, and of all people - Maz hit this on the head. Maz's batting average jumped from 0.051 to 0.075 on a recent post when he suggested that teams will start to lock up players with multi-year contacts that will include a clause that they have to sit out a year if they transfer.
It will cost the schools a little more most likely, but it will stop all of this transferring without consequence and immediately stabilize the musical chairs.

Question: with UM taking over part of NIL, will the amount paid per athlete be public knowledge; like the pay the coaches receive?
Re: The Massachusetts Collective - NIL initiative
Great question. Not sure if the source of funds affects that - meaning money coming form Collaborative instead of from University funds?TruBluMaroon wrote: Mon Mar 24, 2025 3:41 pm Question: with UM taking over part of NIL, will the amount paid per athlete be public knowledge; like the pay the coaches receive?

Member Meeting tonight at 7pm via Zoom with special guest Ryan Bamford. Members check your email for the link.
Re: The Massachusetts Collective - NIL initiative
Like to know if the administration will be funded NILs for the women's team. Asking here, since tonight's meeting is our AD. Especially interest for Olbrys and A10 freshman of the year McKayle. On that same note, liked Pat's priority order for the men's team. Curious about the incoming class and portal recruiting priorities.
Be proud of the present and look to the future.

Re: The Massachusetts Collective - NIL initiative
Internally, UMass will fund Women’s Basketball NIL at a very high level. The Collective will also contribute, though the extent will depend on member interest, which has historically been focused on Men’s Basketball. That said, we remain committed to supporting Women’s Basketball in a meaningful way and complementing the university’s internal efforts.Steve81 wrote: Tue Mar 25, 2025 3:21 pm Like to know if the administration will be funded NILs for the women's team. Re: The Massachusetts Collective - NIL initiative
Thanks Pat and thank you for tonight's meeting. Did paraphrase a lot on the MBB Final thought thread on the MAC board and please tell me if you are not good with it and will delete it and the repost here.
This MAC post had the implied message that we are coming to the MAC with our sh-t together. Very proud of what you do Pat and our AD, Ryan Bamford. Again, will delete this and the MAC post if requested privately or publicly.
The meeting ended just past 8 PM, lots of stuff. Will lead with a connection with the last post. Frank is out recruiting and has 4 or 5 home visit schedule, but there will be some players going to the portal. They don't like to do it by text etc and with respect and in person. The misses on this years portal players was part evaluation and affordability. For instance for center: we could not afford the top 10 on the list. Basketball has a lot of individualism. Some players from P4 teams getting a bit less money for more playing time can have some issues. The AD and HC acknowledge the player transfer missing.(AD relaying conversations with our Frank.)
UMass and UConn 35 years ago made a vastly different investment dollar decision. UConn went on to have multiple Nattys in both women and men's programs. The administration has advocated successfully to the higher reaches of the state. The president, BOT, legislature etc and have gotten the commitment for the next 4-5 years. In 25 years from now, we don't want to be asking, if we only did this.
We have 2 less OOC games with the MAC Sunbelt challenger and open with a Sunbelt team in early November. We want to schedule lower P4 teams on neutral sites. We have Boston College and Providence, which both have been refusing to play us for the past 10 years. We also like scheduling neutral site games in Springfield. We will schedule teams from the A10 with URI leading the list. But we want to get some separation from the A10 and those games will not be next season.
Pat from the NIL tells us his peer collectives are not getting the teams administrations plan on NILs. A lot of them have nothing defined from their athletic departments. We have a strategy, policy and waiting to see what happens with the NCAA settlement. There were almost 60 supporters of the Mass Collective on the call and that the AD said in the next month or so, when recruiting slows down they will have our head coach on. I miss most of these meeting because of my pool league.
Adding on some additional scheduling that we will have around 5-6 buy games and same number in a 3 hours drive. That BU and a few other teams have also refused to play us. That the URI piece will add that Thor and Ryan have talked about scheduling and other A10 teams. But again not next year. Some one asked about media coverage and if the administration needed to do it or if it was Jason. Jason is more a general manager and it will be Ryan and Frank. That perhaps they should have done something 10 days ago, but he and Frank talked and said lets get to work and Frank has been out recruiting, watching players and scheduled 4-5 home visits.
Ryan also said we are not trying just to be a bit better than the top of the MAC, but on par with Big East and lower P4 teams. That the money the A10 provided 10-15 years ago is vastly less than it is today. Also that the A10 got 1 team in and it was an 11th seed. Things are different by sport recruiting and the portal. Hockey is with players to delay going into the NHL. Also adding down here but belongs with advocating to higher ups in the state. We tried doing more with less and has not produce results we like.
-----------
Also like to add. It's important to a lot of us to support Pat and the Mass Collective. If UMass basketball is important to you and you can afford $10 a month, join. It's valuable to the program and all of us. Lets support and kick a$$. No more trying to do more with less. Lets join in and support!

Re: The Massachusetts Collective - NIL initiative
Regarding incoming classes. We don't want to be a team of mercenaries. That we have 2 incoming freshman and probably 1 more. So around 3 freshman for each recruiting class.
Someone brought up the Rhode Island game and if the start time was good for attendance. Ryan said the the 4-7 PM is the desired window and 6 PM maybe the best time for people not getting home to late and being able to go out for dinner either before or after the game. The A10 had a more restrictive media time contract, but we are also a multi sport arena. That there are times that with hockey having a Friday game that a noontime for hockey is not possible.
Because some people do not notice early post will also hadd this here.

Thank you, Pat, for doing what you're doing to save the parquet floor from The Cage. Eager to hear about plans for how they might be available for us sickos, and hopefully raise some money in the process.

It’s definitely been a labor- and cost-intensive undertaking. It took over 100 man hours to get the floor pulled, loaded, and moved into storage (luckily I own a moving company — otherwise it would’ve been a much more expensive project). We’ve got over 150+ panels now in storage, with ongoing costs around $950/month. I'm currently about $6,500 into the project out of pocket, not including time which will be ongoing and significant - but all worth it.
Right now, Im leaning toward selling sections of the floor as is and letting folks repurpose them however they’d like — whether that’s a desk, a display, a wall piece, or something else. We’ve heard some great ideas, like signed sections, coffee tables, clocks, etc., but the time and logistics involved in customizing each one would be tough to take on at scale.
The main goal is to get these pieces into the hands of people who care about UMass, at a fair price that helps raise some funds while keeping the legacy of the Cage alive in a meaningful way.
As we talk more over the next few weeks and during the member meeting, I just want to be transparent about the time and financial commitment that’s gone into this so far — not for credit, but to help manage expectations around what’s practical and what we can realistically produce.
Looking forward to figuring it out with everyone. I encourage folks to share ideas here, via email ([email protected]) and in our member meeting June 17th.
Re: The Massachusetts Collective - NIL initiative
Pat, great job and I hope you are tremendously successful on this project. It may not be possible, but never say never. Maybe working through Ryan or someone else with pull, it would be fantastic if you could get 25 pieces autographed by Dr. J, Marcus and Cal. Maybe each signs 25 different ones or they sign the same ones. It costs nothing to make the proposal and if it works it would raise the value of these piece significantly.
Obviously, logistics are an issue, but with your ability to move things, maybe they all wouldn't have to come to Amherst.
