Ideas to "Fill the Bill"
Yeah, I'd actually say athletes go to more athletic events than any other group in the student body. You can always count on seeing a few fball or bball players at a softball or field hockey game, and women's bball players at men's games etc.wsjer88 wrote:2 years ago I saw Lasme, Forbes, and Clowe at one of our home track meets.throwdown wrote:Great points. Athletes could and should start showing up to support other sports as well. I think it would go a long way if the BBall team showed up to a LacX game and other campus events.
Seriously
I know we've thrown this out in some sorts, but why not do this for the first home game:
Offer free tuition for the semester. Students must be present when drawing occurs. It may be between 15 minutes prior to tip off and 15 min after the game. The students will be there the whole game, and the crowd will be rowdy. I'm sure the university is saving hundreds of thousands by going DK vs what Ford was renegotiated- we could even offer free tuition at every damn game!
Then we get the U-MASS chants going early, get them excited. Hell, play a midnight game home opener while we're at it on ESPN2.
As a '95 alum, I know a bunch of us are coming up for the home opener to support DK- but the students are more important to get out there!

DK has been all over campus since the press conference. I heard he was at the "Taste of UMass" event at the Mullins Center and told the crowd that he would be on campus more than any coach in the country. My friend was leaving one of his classes early yesterday and right as he leaves the building, he runs into Kellogg and they have a brief conversation. This is exactly the kind of thing we need. One student at a time and our home games will eventually be rockin again like it's 1995.

Granted it's above and beyond and you can't hold it against a coach if he's not doing it, but the fact that he does is a great sign. It's the difference between being, let's say, a selfish, arrogant, disingenuous coach who is glad to say the right things in the media and to the important people but really doesn't give a shit about anyone. Or actually being a good person who cares about the school and can relate to the students because he has a vested interest in the success of the school as well as the team.suppitty11 wrote:DK has been all over campus since the press conference. Going back to the press conference: some said DK seemed a bit nervous at first and wasn't completely smooth. I'll absolutely settle for that if he's a genuine person who is more comfortable, able and willing to connect to people in smaller settings -- and not just the big boosters.
Bruce Pearl is great at both things and I saw a story on him where he goes around to the dining halls and stands on a chair and tells everyone to get to the game and of course everyone saw what he did at the women's game. That's where getting the students back into it begins -- make them feel some connection to the program.

I like where it talks about a 300 kids going to the games I bet those kids will help the place get loud. Here is a quote...
one anonymous donor is leading a small group that plans to purchase 300 tickets for each home game - more than 3 percent of the entire Mullins Center- and distribute them to Springfield residents, mostly kids.
only 97% to go..........

Yeah that was me. Thanks for the correction. I had the wrong retard!! Pete Sheppard needs a refuse to lose kick in the ass!!!
Why should we care about BC so much? Most people in Mass don't go to school there. So many of us go to one of the public campuses in the UMass or state college system. That says to me that UMass is the state's team!!!
Pete put a bummer on my day by saying that!! We care, believe me!!! We just need some damn momentum and a little media attention wouldn't hurt!!
Glad you were listening!!
Go UMass, Go DK!!!
