One of the best ways to get to NYC is to drive to a Metro North train station and take the train into Grand Central. MSG is a short walk or cab ride away. You can pick up the Metro North in New Haven, Norwalk, Stamford, and other stops along the way. Parking is free or cheap.
Depending on our game's start time, I'll either drive or take Metro North.

The good thing about Metro North is obviously avoiding the metro NY roadways. An express train (which will stop maybe 3 times) from South Norwalk, will get you into Grand Central in just under one hour. From there you can take a $2 subway ride (with a line switch) to MSG, or you could walk if you were up for it. Parking at the South Norwalk station is about $6.

The downside is that late trains on weeknights only run once an hour. I've often just missed it.

Here's the site for NYC transit. It's down now but that's unusual

Driving eliminates missing the train out, but it also means you have to drive in. If we have the 7pm game, you'll battle city traffic. The 9'ish game will spare you from that, and you'll probably make good time after it's over.

Parking in the city is the challenge. You could find a spot on the street with a luck and willingness to drive up/down several blocks. Garages are available, but be prepared to cough up at least $20.

They should be organizing a trip down instead.
Nah - I think they're better off doing a gamewatch. Us fans can organize ourselves to get down to MSG a lot better, IMO.

I'm on the committee of the Boston alumni club and we are all volunteers; so its not like I can drop everything and organize a bus trip, so we are trying to do our best as umass fans with a gathering at a bar to be named.

That being said, the official alumni club (where you pay dues) are the ones with the paid staff and are really the ones who take the reigns on these things. I will see if there's a possibility of doing a bus from Boston. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt if interested Boston alumni emailed/called the Amherst office and expressed their interest, which could move things along.

The Alumni Association will be hosting a pre-game reception at the "official bar" of the UMass Minuteman:

Joe O's Sports Restaurant & Bar
136 West 33rd Street (between 6th & 7th Ave)
New York City, NY

I thought Professor Thom's was the official UMass joint in NYC. But that location for Joe O's is right there by MSG, so that's good!
To clarify, Professor Thom's is where the NYC Alumni Club hosts it's official game watches for all UMass sports on TV. The bar and it's staff are totally supportive of us. Coach Ford came and broadcast his first Coaches Show from there last November. People that I talked to today (including myself) have never heard of Joe O's until today. That being said, the University needs a place close to the Garden where people can gather before the game, so Joe O's does make the most sense.

Thom's is not to far away - as New York goes (14th St and 2nd Ave) , but it's not a practical site for an event before a game unless it is a later game.

That being said, if you are hanging around town on Wednesday night prior to a game at the Garden on Thursday night, come on down to Thom's for the Sox game and any other sports that will be on. We are hoping to pull something "unofficial" together, if things fall together as we hope and expect they will.

Random question but does anyone know of a store in NYC where you can pick up some UMass shirts or hats?

Wow what more could I ask for...Yankees opening day on the 2nd and UMASS in the NIT finals on the 3rd...it could happen I have my fingers crossed.

This is the last year of Yankees Stadium, Yankee fan or not I would say any Umass fan in NY that week should stop by the stadium and say good bye.

Didn't notice that....I guess that's why I got tickets so easily for the 2nd. But I guess it all works for the best for me if UMASS makes it to the finals.

Its about the name on the front of the $10.00 t-shirt, not the one ironed on the back.
