UMassathletics.com article wrote:"I was very impressed with Josh when he filled on for me to call the UMass at Jacksonville State game," said Behler. "He is an announcer that is well prepared and calls a good game. I think UMass fans will enjoy listening to him. He will do a great job carrying on the tradition of quality broadcasts on the UMass Sports Network."
I remember this very vaguely....anyone remember him calling this game for us?

Boise State is very lucky. UMass was very lucky. I cant even imagine how many hours/week Bob pulled. He was all UMass. I remember listening to him and Marty on the ZONE (rip) recalling old UMass stories. Stories of Jack, the NCAA's, Cal and Camby. It will be impossible to replace such a great and hardworking asset to this University. Thank you Bob Behler and good luck.

They have a few clips of him doing the Jax State game at the UMassAthletics site. He sounds young to me, sounds better when he's excited. Will give him every opportunity though. Welcome to UMass, Josh.

great call

I remember specifically posting a comment on the Jax State thread mentioning how impressed I was with the guy. I believe he knows Jason Yellin from their time together at Maryland (the announcer was a student broadcaster and Yellin was an assistant sid). Guess I'll just have to get the job when it's no longer on an interim basis...

Although the words "for 2008-09" appear in the UMass release, this does not smell like an interim hiring to me.

We initially said that we were hiring an interim announcer. This release says he is the "new Manager of Broadcast Operations".

"Jack didn’t have any envy in him," Calipari said. "He was the greatest coach to ever coach here."

I remember him calling the game and commenting about it in the chat. He doesn't have the classic "radio voice" but neither did Bob. It's all what you do with what you are given. Welcome to UMass, Josh and best of luck to you.

Here's the Jacksonville St thread (Maurer filled in for Behler, who was calling our football game):

http://umasshoops.com/board/viewtopic.p ... cksonville

Only real comment about Maurer's performance came from Marty Peretz, who commented that Maurer "is doing a fantastic job" and "maybe we could get him to do color for other games?" There were no "this guy sucks!" comments in the thread, so that has to be good!

comments were interesting...sounds like Bob handled himself perfectly, given the situation. I didn't realize he was replacing a 35 year icon.

We have a hard enough time getting people to talk about and critique the game! Forget about the broadcaster . .

A lot of people brought up the SLU broadcasters last night, so I wanted to bring this thread back to life.

The SLU play-by-play man was a bit insane. At one point he was screaming at the refs about a terrible call. There's being a homer, then there's being flat out unprofessional. Their color commentator kept it more under control.

That got me thinking that Josh Maurer's been doing a pretty good job in the games that I've heard. He gets excited with big plays, but he doesn't stray into the homer territory, and doesn't lose it like the SLU guy did last night.

I think he's doing a pretty good job following Bob.

Early in the game, like the first five minutes, when we had the lead, I thought the SLU guys were pretty good. They were calm, professional, and said some great things about the UMass team. Then all hell broke loose. It was like they started huffing crack on the air. One of the most unprofessional displays I have ever heard.

The problem I have with Josh is that there isn't enough play by play and too much yakking. There was a stretch in last night's game where he was yakking for two complete posessions. I want play by play when the ball is live. Save the yakking for the dead ball.

Agreed - Also I thought Jason Yellin did a nice job last night when I listened to parts of it on the radio.
This is the most enjoyable losing season ever!
