Its about the name on the front of the $10.00 t-shirt, not the one ironed on the back.
I think you need to take into consideration the schedule that team played vs. this year's and the amount of pressure that came with being the #1 team in the country and getting every team's best shot every night. Granted they were surrounded by great players, but there was very little backcourt depth back then so they were it. I don't think stats tell the whole story ever, particularly in this instance. For players on a team making the NIT Final 4 to top a team that made the NCAA Final 4 the difference in stats would have to be much greater.UMass87 wrote:Fair points. Consider, though, that Lowe's assist average is only 0.5/per game less than Padilla's in 95-96 while averaging 4 minutes per game less. Padilla's 2.5 a/to was considerably better than Lowe's 2.1 this year. Travieso had a better 3-pt fg% (.403 versus 0.371) than Harris but their overall FG% is almost identical - with Harris taking far more shots. Harris is a much better driver than Travieso.nale wrote:As I said Lowe and Harris have an opportunity to be the best.UMass87 wrote: Lowe and Harris will have the opportunity to demonstrate that they are the best backcourt ever next year. Unlike previous UMass backcourts they will have very little up front to help them. Padilla and Travieso were not the same in 96-97 without Camby, Bright and Dingle.
The team certainly wasn't as good but Padilla and Carmelo were still great in 96-97. Pretty much the same as before. Maybe not quite the same stats as 95-96. But Travieso scoring average went up. Padilla assists went from the best in UMASS history to the ninth best but his steals only went down from the best to the third best. Carmelo had only 92 three's instead of 104.
I wouldn' say they were not the same in 96-97 consider the focus of defenses were now on them.
I think we agree that they have the chance to prove it next year. My money's on Lowe and Harris. I think Ford will play a lot of Lowe, Harris, and Gurley at the same time and Harris will play Forbes' role on offense.
- one thing surprised me when I compared the 95-96 stats to this year's stats. The 95-96 team shot 0.454 and this year's team shot 0.445. The interesting thing is that this year's team attempted nearly twice as many 3-point shots. This year's team was a more efficient team than the 95-96 team - arguably a better shooting team.
All of that said, nothing against Harris and Lowe. They're great and it's exciting to know that they have another year left.
No doubt. The schedule in 95-96 was an order of magnitude stronger. The target on UMass's back was infinitely bigger. The thing I had forgotten was that Camby really was not a particularly efficient scorer (0.477 fg%) and that is the biggest difference statistically.umass21 wrote:...

I thought Professor Thom's was the official UMass joint in NYC. But that location for Joe O's is right there by MSG, so that's good!LeBlanc88 wrote:More information to be posted tomorrow regarding this event.

When I was listening to Dale and Holley with some moron named Mike Munanski sitting in for Dale, all the guy was doing was ripping UMass and praising UConn. I missed most of the show, but it sounded like Munanski is a UConn Grad. The guy was a total dick. Michael Holley somewhat defended UMass and asked Munanski why Calhoun missed getting Camby. Of course, the dick answered, "how much did they have to pay to get Camby there?" and "why did they have to take the final four banner down?" He also belittled the fact that UMass was in the NIT final four. I was so PISSED that I wanted to call, but the show was almost over and there was no chance. What an asshole the guy is.LooneyGoon wrote:UMass getting alot of airtime on EEI today....
Checkout the question on the WEEI website. I am sure this was driven by the discussion I noted above -- http://www.weei.com/pages/235643.php?

One of the best ways to get to NYC is to drive to a Metro North train station and take the train into Grand Central. MSG is a short walk or cab ride away. You can pick up the Metro North in New Haven, Norwalk, Stamford, and other stops along the way. Parking is free or cheap.R&G wrote:I'm trying to make a roadtrip down to NY for the game. While I've been to NY about a dozen times, I've only driven there once. Do any of you guys who have more knowledge of the city have a good plan for getting in, parking and getting out without too much of a hassle?

I am an everyday Metro North commuter. If we have the 9:00 game, which probably will not start right at 9:00, the game probably will not end until after midnight. There are only 3 trains after that one.shovelhd wrote:One of the best ways to get to NYC is to drive to a Metro North train station and take the train into Grand Central. If you drive into the City, I would suggest parking on Park Avenue or Lexington Avenue below 34th street after 6:00. Parking is free and is only 3 blocks away from the Garden.

I also wouldn't be surprised if there are some guys there that lurk around these parts..... I almost made that thread a poll questions but just wanted some healthy debate and to see if everyone was thinking the same thing I was.

I'd like to hear from you guys if there was any specific discussion about our NIT run on EEI?? The signal doesn't come in that strong here in Tampa...
UConn girls are........................... Huskies!!
Reserve spots as soon as you can. I know several people (including me) who must wait for departure time details before they can commit to the bus trip. Once the game time is figured out the bus trip will fall into place. I made the bus trip down the last time ('91), but now being married with children it's tougher to drop everything and go to an away game.sldrums wrote:Does anyone know how many buses there will be, and if there are spots left on the buses. I have a group of 15 and hope we can get on.
