I think Frank was upset they were standing around on offense and weren’t moving the ball. Outside shots were falling in the first half and that’s why he called it fools gold. In the second half the shots weren’t falling and they were still standing around. I think his frustration comes from the fact they execute in practice but fall away from it during the games.

Good news is we won. CCSU is a well coached team so it was a good win and hopefully they will build off it.

Sorry, I didn't feel like writing a long explanation as to why he was doing a terrible job coaching. Others here have done into more detail about his failings yesterday.

The reported attendance was 2,743. I didn't think we got to 2,000.

Gettig back to Frank and the team. wmmmfan has it right. I could hear Frank yelling "move" all 2nd half and he probably yelled it in the first half but since the shots were falling I wasn't paying attention. He's still experimenting with lineups and I'll give him a pass on that until maybe 10 games in.

I'm not overly concerned about our offense. We have enough weapons, inside and outside to score. The unforced turnovers and poor free-throw shooting are an issue. They cost us at least 10 points yesterday and gave CCSU 23 points off of turnovers. Way too many!

The interior defense, however, has me worried. We don't have a shot blocker and it seems that Luka and Clerc are slow to react when an opponent beats his man off the dribble and penetrates. That leads to a basket or free throws. Leo is a bit quicker, but he also fouls a lot. Good teams will find a way to exploit this.

^^ I agree, unless Frank can get these guys to move on defense and become a decent cohesive team, I think this is a 500 or so year!

Dude we all know how you feel. You do not like Frank which is your prerogative, but it's annoying to read every time it goes sideways.

You can't just scream "MOVE", there is an art to moving without the ball in basketball, especially as a team. Movement off the ball should be practiced with no plays and practiced with set plays. If the coach screams Move and no one knows what to do, then there's your answer. Running around with no strategic plan will just bring in all the defenders together. Movement and spacing is extremely important. Our basketball court always looks small, we lack spacing and movement, and instead of screaming, practice, adjust, try something new.
Frank reminds me of my high school basketball coach, who ran the same exact plays, every single year. Soon, every player and coach in our league knew all our plays. Why? He never changed the name of the plays, and they were always the same thing. His argument was, if you do it right, it'll always work - not even considering that the other coach and team may ADJUST, and we never practiced these situations. The best coaches always know how to naturally adjust to an ad-hoc game plan, and UMass basketball have always had issues with mid-game adjustments.

100%, nice post, Scoop. I'm right there with Frank. I don't mind a tough coach, I actually prefer one. But more often than not, he's hurling insults and vague instructions like "move". I don't know what's going on in the timeout huddles, but during the flow of the game, there appears to be very little strategic coaching and adjusting, just a lot of pouting, yelling, and insulting.

In his interviews with Jay, he can be very insightful and it's clear he knows what he's talking about and is probably a very decent tactician. But something happens to his brain when they tip that ball off and he goes pure psycho mode. It's getting tiring, but I'll put up with it if he wins. This is the year he needs to show me that he's a winner and not the .500 coach he's basically been since that Final 4 season.

Excellent points on this thread. Terrible win !!! How dare anybody support Coach Frank !!! How Dare Coach Frank instruct players to move b/c "there's an art to moving w/o the ball". It was great when bruiser did the same exact thing however....

That is actually pretty funny Jack.... It is more about Frank's style that seems to touch people off here. He is a Barker for sure.

I knew when they hired him his courtside manner might not well with a lot of people here. The guy has a reputation as a lunatic. Like Belichik, you can get away with shit like that when you are winning.... not so much when your team is not.

I think Frank cares too much about D.. it is hard to get these new age youngsters to play D. Get yourself a good Pt guard, two serviceable bigs and 5 3 pt shooters.. go for 90+ a game..more than one way to skin a cat.
