Springfield bidding for A-10 Tournament
RE:

Springfield
AC...only there once for the Lou Roe game; not a gambler; doesn't overly interest me...
Cinci... been there for the A-10s... There are some decent eats if you know where to go...but X fans aren't into supporting it unless X is playing... UD fans an hour away will support it more than the X fans...
Dayton...been there...guaranteed good crowd from UD fans and they are pretty good fans... easy for me with childhood best friend/UMie there to stay and social with (ditto if in Cinci)
Pittsburgh...been there many times and the city is pretty cool once you learn to navigate the sections by car...which is pretty easy once you figure it out... Shadyside, Squirrel Hill, The Strip, The Cultural District (Theatres), et al give you plenty to do there...
Springfield... nice commute; less $$$...

Please expound. Please tell us exactly what 'touristy stuff' there is to do in AC after you leave one of the casinos. I'm not talking about Philly, I'm talking about AC.SavageNYCQueens wrote:I compelety agree. As a UMass fan, I would love for the A-10 Tournament to be held in Springfield. It's a bit too far from Philly to ensure that those fans make the trip. Besides us, there's not a team in the conference within a 5 hour drive to Springfield. The A-10 has become a mid atlantic, even mid west conference with few exceptions.
Buuuuuut the rest of the teams in the conference would hate this. Springfield hosting this event is pretty unrealistic. In my opinion, places like Atlantic City have a lot more to offer as far as touristy stuff to do and less time to get time there for most teams.

The Hoophall president thinks Springfield is one of the two finalists:

Well, it'd be smart to say that Springfield is one of the two finalists even if it's not, because then we can claim we finished second. I have a hard time believing they're not the underdog after everyone except maybe Pittsburgh. Would be wonderful if it worked out though. UMass missing the tournament this year would not have helped their bid.
On the other hand, nobody's gonna come out and say "Nah, we have no shot."Rocks22 wrote:The Hoophall president thinks Springfield is one of the two finalists:

Matty V is reporting that Atlantic City has won three more years of hosting the tourney.

Re: not a good spot
I think hes referring to the casinos as the touristy stuff. I have been to 2 of the 3 tournaments in AC and I think the entire city is a dump. I will say that in only 2 years time they have made significant improvements to the surrounding areas of the boardwalk. In AC's defense, the casinos do offer a lot of things aside from gambling. There were a ton of shows (comedy, music, etc) going on while I was there both times. The clubs and partying scene was actually surprisingly good. And the better casinos offer really nice pools, spas, etc. Shopping has become a big draw there to with the opening of a ton of new stores in and around the area of the Sheraton off the boardwalk. (Not to mention that some of the casinos have shopping malls in them) So there is other stuff to do than gamble if you aren't into that, but for a lot of folks that is enticing. It's not extremely hard to find things to do there.Swampy wrote:Please expound. Please tell us exactly what 'touristy stuff' there is to do in AC after you leave one of the casinos. I think this is the right decision. Give AC another chance with the new Friday-Saturday-Sunday format. I think you'll see increased attendance for the semis and finals.MikeUMA wrote:Matty V is reporting that Atlantic City has won three more years of hosting the tourney.
