Re: Average Age of UmassHoops.com diehards
I'm 45, went to UMass in the early 2000's (same time I believe as UMasshooops.com inception). I didn't know about UMasshoops as a student. I moved back east and cont to follow the team. I moved back to the valley in 2011 and had a friend who was another die hard that told me about this site. A few people at work followed UMass hoops and I told them about the site. They had lived in the valley for most if not all their lives and also had no idea.
Thank you Mike for creating, running, and maintaining this site. I don't use social media platforms. This site is where I go to get my daily dose of UMass hoops information. Honestly not sure I would be a die hard w/o this site to follow the team.

I just have to come up with a better process. There's some people out there who've wanted to join and I shouldn't be alienating them. We could use a few fresh takes.69MG wrote: Mon Aug 11, 2025 6:55 pm Maybe you could tell new people they are free to browse but membership is closed at this time.

I imagine majority would either fall in the retirement age or the National Football champ crowd. We were in high school or jr-high when UMass went to the final 4 which most likely influenced our application to UMass which we started to see the downfall of UMass bball but maybe we got the 98 championship when we were there or about to be there. That's where I fall. The Lari Ketner (rip), Mike Babul (rip) Monty Mack Era, Marcel Shipp (had to put FB in here)!!
Yes I am a Minuteman!! Best 60 seconds of your life!!

Interesting to see that the two most popular age groups are 70-79, like me at 75, and 40-49.
Are any of the 40-49 group the kids of the 70-79 group? I used to take my kids to games during the Calipari era regularly. Neither are on the board, but I can see how that could happen for others here.
I got hooked on UMass Hoops by Julius' teams when I was a student. I came to UMass after graduating HS in '67. I went to games during the 67-68 season, but it wasn't until Julius' freshman year that I got hooked. We had fewer entertainment options that students do now, so going to games was a great way to get out of the dorms....twist one up and head to the Cage for the hoops double header!
One thing the Erving era and the Calipari era had in common was the feeling that UMass captured lightning in bottle. That feeling made going to games that much more fun! We knew something the rest of the basketball world did not.
I've been on this board as well as previous iterations of it and am grateful for Mike and all he's done to keep it current....especially during down years when only us die-hards even pay attention to UMass basketball.

Less than 10% of the posters are under 40... damn. Not sure what that says about the future of the fanbase...
Re: Average Age of UmassHoops.com diehards
^ Just my opinion but based on the poll there seems to be a strong correlation between UMass’ winning and the age groups represented.

It's possible, but I'd also suggest that most fans under 40 are spending more time on more social media platforms that the typical online forum like this, be that related to UMass stuff or other topics.

Moving from one quantile into another in a few weeks. Nice round milestone number, don'tcha know.
Today's exercise in UMassHoops diehard-dom:
I'm currently sitting at Gate C9 at BWI on my way back from Florida. Earbuds are in and the UMass-Maryland game from 12/10/1994, played only a few miles from here in downtown Balto, pumping through iTunes on the laptop.
