2012-2013 Season
Somebody explain why "UMASS" would ever need to be in all caps again? Does it actually stand for something like IUPUI?
and that's the waaaaaaaaaaaay the news goes.

The key with having quality depth is being able to match up with your opponent so you create mismatches or neutralize their advantages. Lots of possibilities if DK can manage the rotation and egos well enough to maintain the chemistry and effort. Very excited to add some more ballhandlers like Jordan and Davis.
This is the most enjoyable losing season ever!
At this point whos ahead of who doesn't matter.Practice and preseason will put them in the right order and game play will keep them there once the season starts.I will say JL is going to do damage here.He has the athleticism of a put or maxie in a guards body. The best part he is confident and aggressive and likes to work.He will be a fine defender once he adjusts and has a high motor.
My 2 cents is worth less in Canada.

I think it's a bit of a stretch to think he will turn 180 and be great next yr. I think 11ppg and the same aggressive hard work on D would be nice. And I'd like to see him develop his drive and shoot. When he does it, it can open our offense up. Like to see him get his shooting pct up a few ticks also. His ft shooting is atrocious.Marty Peretz wrote:Here's the thing re: Freddie and an outstanding season. It's not that I don't think he's capable of having a great year, but if he does, someone's going to lose minutes. And just who is that going to be? Jesse? Doubtful. Kid emerged as a lock-down defender, a dynamic secondary scoring option and a clear-cut starter. Javorn? Perhaps, but their games are pretty different. Putney? I doubt it, since Raph is only going to improve and plays a very different game than Freddie anyway. Laguerre? Sure, but he's a freshman anyway, so it's not like people are expecting him to be the second coming of Carmelo Travieso in his first season. Sampson Carter? Maybe, but Sampson's game is pretty different than Freddie's as well. I think Freddie could be a 3rd team all league type player, but I'm not sure how his skills are going to be incorporated into our up-tempo sets. That could all change if he can hit 40 percent or more of his three's because now you have a true zone breaker threat, but if he's not an energetic zone breaker off the bench, the only way Freddie is going to be a great player is if he's THE guy. I actually think he's got the talent to be THE guy somewhere (even here, if we played a different style) but how do people see him being a dominant presence for next year's UMass team? I'm not trying to call people out; I'm just really curious. Believe me, I'd like to see it more than anyone.
I also want to know what we'd define as a "great year." Remember, Freddie averaged I htink 9 points a game in his frosh and soph years before dipping to 6 and change this year (if I recall correctly). Is a great year 11 ppg? 19? I don't know. I'm just saying that "great" is a subjective standard. To me, a great year for Freddie would be shooting 40 percent from 3 and, let's say, 48 percent from the field, playing tough D, not committing too many turnovers and burying some clutch shots.

That's the beauty of next year's team -- we can put on the floor a team to exploit any team's weakness. Some examples ...
Speed team: Chaz, Morgan, Farrell, Carter, Esho.
Height team: Morgan, Putney, Carter, Esho, Bergantino
3-point shooting team: Chaz, Morgan, Farrell, Putney, Vinson
Penetration team: Chaz, Morgan, Putney, Carter, Vinson
Post-up team: Farrell, Riley, Putney, Vinson, Lalanne

That's a great point. He's so athletic, he shuns the contact and too often gets called for the retaliatory or compensatory movement. He's no post player, but he could learn to take come contact and draw the foul.kdogg8173 wrote:Hopefully some weight will let Putney be a little more aggressive. For all times he had the ball in his hand, he only averaged a shade over 1 FTA per game. If he can get to the line more, watch out.
No longer true about Javorn. He is developing his moves from the left and even scored a lefty lay up this year. Jordan had the rep in h.s. of only going left.Chris20 wrote:Javorn is like Gurley...next time he goes left will be the first. But like Anthony, he actually has a quick enough step that most guys don't stop it anyway. He just needs to finish more consistently.
I love that Jordan is lefty, but seems to have that righty tomahawk as his go-to jam.

Why wouldn't JL make your penetration team????? And even though he may not shoot a good pct, if there is four seconds left and I need a 3 I will give it to Riley due to quick release, range, and confidence to hit that shot.MullinsManiac wrote:That's the beauty of next year's team -- we can put on the floor a team to exploit any team's weakness.
