during the season I was talking to a long time friend of Derek's - they grew up together and they still remain close - he said he asked Derek how it was to coach with Frank - Derek's response - "I'd rather not answer that" and he said he just left it at that. So you can all draw your own conclusions from that - in my opinion if he has a chance to go coach for Cal he will.

The only thing possibly preventing DK from going to coach with Cal would be Max's age. Otherwise, I agree, there's no way he'd stay here as an assistant over going to UK as an assistant with Cal.

^ Assuming his salary would be multiplied, of course he should/would take that job.
I also think it wouldn't be a loss for UMass if he left, assuming of course Frank hires someone competent and not just another buddy of his.

Is Samurai Hoops really a source to be taken seriously?
It's not implausible, but I'm not running with that particular lead.

Yes, very much so

Most people don't know how brutal things got around DK's firing. It is beyond incredible that he came back. It shows how much he loves UMass. There is no way he planned on coming back for one season. The players participating in this NIL Throwback Tournament would not have done so if there wasn't reconciliation with DK. Next season is the 10th anniversary of the NCAA Tournament season. It would be a crazy time for DK to leave.
Yes, 95% of assistants would jump at the chance to go to Kentucky with Cal. If DK does that, perhaps the reality will be that simple. It's was too good of an opportunity to pass up.
But at the same time it would set off alarm bells for me. Combined with the players leaving, I think we've got a major issue in Amherst if DK leaves.
And keep in mind we're pushing hard for NEC portal transfers, a conference DK has connections with. Does someone like Coen back out now?
I still don't believe the ship is sinking but there is an iceberg not too far away...

If he leaves for UK my guess, and this is just a guess, is that they pay quite a bit more than UMass does. Not sure how much could be read into it other than that. Could other forces be at work? Sure, but sometimes some things are just about the money.
Again, that’s just a guess though. I don’t actually know that the UK basketball program has more money than the UMass basketball program.

It's baffling that there appears to be a significant number of people on here who think DK is a stellar coach.

Reconciliation with DK?
What do you mean? Between who and who?
Also, the TBT has very little to do with UMass, officially. At least that's my impression. Five College Movers / The Collective are really driving the TBT.
And are you expecting UM to do some sort of tribute recognition about the 2013-14 season? I'd be kind of surprised if they did. Such a thing would be like VCU's #6 banner, but not as good. We went 7-6 down the stretch of that regular season, tied for 5th place, got bounced in the Quarters, then smoked in the NCAA game. I mean no disrespect to any of the players or staff when I say all that, but it's not about how you start, it's how you finish, and that great start evaporated. I feel a little better about the 1997 and 98 NCAAs than I do the 2014.

Bamford/UMass and DK. This was discussed quite a bit when DK came back last year. Both parties had a lot of pride swallowing for this to happen.

What exactly does UMass and Bamford have to apologize for?

I think it’d be cool to honor the 2014 team before a game at the Mullins this year. Just bring them out and show a highlight video on the screen. That was the only UMass team to make the tourney in 25 years. Gave us a great season and a sold out Mullins center.

^ It took 35 years for us to honor the 1962 tourney team. It included a cocktail hour with spouses and then a banquet with Marty Dobrow as MC. There were some tears in that pre-game session. Let's do it a lot sooner with the 2014 team.

I'd be surprised if Cal would poach a UMass coach, he speaks so highly of UMass. And I thought DK and his ties here were his reason for wanting to come back. Who knows tho. Nothing surprises me anymore about college hoop

^ I was wondering if there would be any changes to the coaching staff. Agreed losing DK would be no bueno.
My how the turntables...
