Re: Average Age of UmassHoops.com diehards
As much as I love the message board format and prefer it over twitter, I don't think the younger crowd really knows about this site or has much interest in it, which is a shame because Mike does such a great job not only with the board but with the historical database on the main page. If they're following the team, they're probably doing it via twitter or instagram.

You think it's because this is more discussion based vs Twitter or Instagram? Different styles of communication maybe

I like the board because it's more discussion based. Instagram and twitter are mobile apps and the immediacy of the notifications and phone buzzing is exciting for the younger crowd. For me, the discussions here are always better, even if they're contentious or get ridiculous. Those social media discussions seem to always be about how terrible UMass is, which even when tongue-in-cheek, is exhausting. Even more exhausting is that everyone thinks they're god's gift to comedy. They are not. I cruise the socials for team updates and news, but I'll be here for discussion.

I guess I'm not the youngest here, since there are others in their 30s.

A question for some of you younger folks who are more adept at the various social media platforms than I am. Could you put out some kind of a post "To all UMass Sports Fans" telling them about UMassHoops.com?Juice Stand wrote: Sun Aug 10, 2025 6:40 am As much as I love the message board format and prefer it over twitter, I don't think the younger crowd really knows about this site or has much interest in it, which is a shame because Mike does such a great job not only with the board but with the historical database on the main page. I think you are right that most of the younger crowd doesn't even know the site exists. It would be nice if this same message could be sent to the student body, but I don't think that is possible.

Re: Average Age of UmassHoops.com diehards
When I was starting to really dive into UMass basketball, I was just looking for a community that shared the same interest and wanted to talk about it. I think I ran a google search and found this board, and at the time the in-game chat room, which was kind of fun. That was back in 2011. Mike has built out the historical stuff on the main page, which I check out all the time and is probably better than the available records on the UMass athletics page.
Today, you don't have to search out the community. It's so easy to create an account on instagram or twitter, follow the team account, and then you instantly start connecting with other people that follow that account, but it just doesn't have the same quality that the board does for some reason. I'm a lifer over here.

I'm so adept at the social media platforms that I know to avoid them like the plague.69MG wrote: Mon Aug 11, 2025 10:35 amA question for some of you younger folks who are more adept at the various social media platforms than I am. I'm not helping bring the average age down. Long story short, I've been really lazy about admitting new members. It's time consuming and has fallen way down my priority list.
The alternative: to just open the doors and let anyone in, is not a good one. When I've done that in the past, new registrations are almost entirely from spammers. I'm not going to let that happen again.

You could get some volunteers to help out with that task maybe.MikeUMA wrote: Mon Aug 11, 2025 12:41 pm I'm not helping bring the average age down. Long story short, I've been really lazy about admitting new members. It's time consuming and has fallen way down my priority list.

Re: Average Age of UmassHoops.com diehards
Been a while, but use to see sites that would ask a few challenge questions. 1 easy and one fairly hard. Don't know if that really saves any time. Think the A10 basketballforum went way down hill once Xavier left and A10 talk gave it a go. It never seemed to make it back. Could it also be there are alternatives that also waned like A10 talk, aka 247sports site. Know you don't want to bring it up, but with the die hearts, we had really good times and not as much to drive young people here or to some extent watching the games at the Mullins.
Then there is no rails/monitors. I know, not a priority, but you have a few posters that post negative crap and are ignorant that they really turn people away. CSNbbs has warnings, bans for a short bit and longer and permanently banned.

3 Goals: Move to FBS, leave the A10, and be successful in our conference

Mike, sorry to cause you any grief. Maybe you could tell new people they are free to browse but membership is closed at this time.MikeUMA wrote: Mon Aug 11, 2025 12:41 pm I'm not helping bring the average age down.
