You're kidding yourself if you think this dumpster fire would be a respectable FCS program.

And similarly, the successful teams over the Yankee/A10/CAA eras of UMass football would have been respectable and competed in the G5. The same ingredients required in the CAA are a recipe for success in the MAC.

I mean the best analogy I could use is if the Cal years got us to the Big East, but we still hired Lappas, Kellogg, and McCall. People would be clamouring for us to drop down to the A-10 because "we used to dominate and win titles".

^Steve the problem with staying the course is that it has been lined with minefields and UMass has stepped into every one of them...

I didn't say that it would be today! It would be a lot faster to improve as an FCS program then FBS. :D

You weren't even alive during most of the Yankee/A10/CAA years (I was). UMass football was good but never had the athletes to compete week in and out against any FBS programs! You are wrong with that comment!!!

I started to follow the program when its was still D2, before 1-AA--yikes!

This is football we are discussing here!

The idea that UMass doesn't have the resources to compete with the mid-size regional schools of the G5 is ridiculous. Dropping down is embarrassing.
i hear ya about dropping down but this has been bad from the start. so we start over again w/ another coach with the hopes of being .500 in 4 years
at best. Again its painfully hard to recruit football in the Northeast especially FBS with our current facilities etc. and the commitment of the administration. Just piles of negatives over the entire FBS attempt. Stay w/ FBS and keep pouring the gasoline on the fire. Let me know when the continued lopsided scores that we have seen continue . Talk about embarrassing
Exactly! UMass was NEVER an embarrassment as an FCS program! We are now and will be for the foreseeable future!
Our issues started as FCS when Brown left and Morris took over. Some of those fcs loses on our final year was embarrassing.

That said when a program has ineffective coaches, bad things happen. Doesn't matter if it's P5, G5, or FCS.

Most agree on the three trilogies, solid and consistent administration support, good coaching and staff hires and a conference to help secure and wrap everything. It helps knowing most of your opponents and being able to recruit for a conference's style of play. The MAC is a good conference in all sports.

^Checked the schedule from 2011, the last year as an FCS program and none of the losses were that bad. After all the years of success, more was expected of the team but compared to now they were a better team. They lost to BC and top 25 teams UNH/Maine/James Madison in mostly competitive games. Even beat a top 10# Delaware team. The program now gets destroyed by .500 FCS teams...WTF!

JMU posters made it sound bad and think we were around .500 and declining with Morris at the helm.

5 - 6...We had high expectations in those days :(

That team had Blanchflower and Hernandez--would love to have players like that now!

FYI college top 25 from ESPN shows the Bonnies at #22 and no other team even receiving votes. The MAC had a single receiving votes with Ohio.
Of interest is Rutgers received 7 votes.

^This is the football board! Plus the MAC is dead to UMass, or you haven't heard--they aren't expanding:

The won't expand with Western Kentucky and a football only as the Dakotas or UMass or a fcs call up. Says nothing more. UMass going all sports think that would be evaluated in it's own right.
