Steve max-agree with your thinking rather than the post, let it take Gapare In a heartbeat. Potential doesn’t win games! Show me a team that has a starting lineup full of potentials I’ll show you a losing team. So what if Gapare can Jump up high in dunk the ball. OK!Jayden Has basketball smarts…so does Matt Cross. I go back 1961 when I was at Umass I remember a player named Popa Lo 1986 big center. Athletic never could score— potential.Sure. Transferred to Bryant Oh well . Couldn’t score there either. Point made huh?
Re: How former UMass players have fared after entering the portal
My thinking with Garpare is if you can get him to play like Lasme around the hoop instead of hang around the perimeter he could be something special. I agree Jayden is a talented player who once he gets more confident in his offense game could be great.

Papa Lo was recruited by Ford. Long after 86. I think you are thinking of John Tate?Floridafan71 wrote: Sat Apr 13, 2024 6:32 pm Steve max-agree with your thinking rather than the post, let it take Gapare In a heartbeat. Gerlufsen was still at UMass in 1986. Cal’s 1st season was 88-89. Tate was one of Cal’s guys.
Papa Lo definitely transferred to Bryant, but that was in 2007.

Tate was here before Cal. Cal had two recruits his first year (Brown and McCoy)LS71 wrote: Sun Apr 14, 2024 9:14 am Gerlufsen was still at UMass in 1986. Cal’s 1st season was 88-89. Tate was one of Cal’s guys.

Pretty sure Tate started under Ron but played in Cal's first year.

Re: How former UMass players have fared after entering the portal
^ Correct. Tate played for Ron in the 1987-1988 season and then for Cal for 3 years. Cal started in the 1988-1989 season.
Re: How former UMass players have fared after entering the portal
Thanks. Not sure why I thought it was 3 with Ron and 1 with Cal, had it reversed in my head somehow.69MG wrote: Sun Apr 14, 2024 1:29 pm ^ Correct. Tate played for Ron in the 1987-1988 season and then for Cal for 3 years. Cal started in the 1988-1989 season.

Gerlufsen’s last year was my 1st as a STH.stevemaz wrote: Sun Apr 14, 2024 12:57 pmTate was here before Cal. Cal had two recruits his first year (Brown and McCoy)LS71 wrote: Sun Apr 14, 2024 9:14 am Gerlufsen was still at UMass in 1986. Cal’s 1st season was 88-89. Tate was one of Cal’s guys.

I forgot Tate played that year. I do remember that Brown and McCoy were Cal’s 1st recruits. Must be Tate’s Pittsburgh roots that made me think of him as one of Cal’s guys.

It's amazing how your game can grow and you have the freedom to play ball when you don't have a maniac screaming in your face for 2 hours every game. I like an old school coach that holds players accountable, but his maniacal screaming is outrageous, although it looks like some of the players just laugh it off at this point. Jayden certainly did the other night.UMass transfer guard Marqui Worthy in his first two games for UC Riverside: 11/3 vs La Sierra | 16 PTS, 6 REB, 2 AST, 3 STL, 1 BLK, 70% FG (90-49 W). 11/6 at North Dakota | 23 PTS, 7 REB, 3 AST, 3 STL, 66.7% FG (74-70 W). Worthy scored 16+ once at UMass in 56 games (18, Dayton)
Elsewhere:
Keon Thompson: 20 points, 5 rebounds for Stephen F. Austin on 11/3
Malek Abdelgowad: 11 points, 10 rebounds for Southern (vs. Marquette) on 11/5
Lewis Walker: 16 points, 4 rebounds for North Carolina A&T on 11/4
Amadou Doumbia added 7 pts, 10 reb for NC A&T

I just looked up Nate Guerengomba at Quinnipiac, who I totally forgot about. So far he's logged 2 pts and 6 reb on 1-7 shooting in 31 minutes played against St Johns and CCSU.
Shahid Muhammed only got on the court for 4 minutes in FSU's opener.

Re: How former UMass players have fared after entering the portal
I remember last year before the season started Frank referred to the roster as now "having my guys" on the team. Loyal guys. He was tired of the transfers who weren't loyal to him, let alone the school. And now this year he's saying the same thing -- now he's got the "right guys". It's just blaming the kids for the team's failure and the program's inability to keep players, and surely the fate of a "low-major" program that has to watch its best players move up to larger stages and others move on to better fits. That's today's world.
I'm curious to see if these kids we're tracking on this list continue to transfer or if they somehow magically "find a permanent home" after they leave Amherst.

There are 18 former Minutemen playing at other college stops now. We got 'em all (I think) here...

There's one who's still using the COVID season bonus. True sickos might know who that is.

^ Mike, that is fabulous. I took a quick look and it's worth spending some time on if you're a BB nerd like I am. Checked Gapare, the supposed superstar. He's probably the biggest overall disappointment on the list.
