Yup, nothing nothing proves improvement more than scoring on your own defense.

See Basketball, internal scrimmage results, learned nothing as regular season looked entirely different.

I guess you missed it that the defense is generally ahead of the offense and held the offense out of a red zone td a week or 2 ago. It is the offense that sucked and rated near last in FBS. So yes, this something will be watching.

They are trying to make it more this year with stuff for kids. Not sure how it will pan out.

You realize that both the offense and defense were rated dead last in FBS last year. Yes the D is usually ahead of the O in spring and early camp. I watched the spring game last year and came away thinking they might be pretty good. I thought that because it was really bad on really bad, it actually made them look halfway decent.

Good roster overhaul and as important, a new OC. If the Oline can hold up, there should be some pieces to be much more successful. I guess when you win zero games.. winning 3 or 4 would qualify as much more successful.

Exactly and felt the same way as you in last years Spring game. The old OC was a QB coach and the QB looked decent in the spring. To yours and others post, if both OL and DL are small they look OK playing in spring but not against opponents. What drove me nuts last year was so apparent in the second game. Zero OC adjustments that kept carrying through. Coach Warner will be much better with schemes and adjustments. That is my hope, and he does have a good reputation as an OC.

Really enjoyed the spring "game" today. There was a festive atmosphere, and it was nice to see old friends. I, and the people near me, were surprised at the size of the crowd - much larger than recent years. It was hard to tell about the quality of the players, but if I had to say one thing, it was that the passing game looked great.

^ Regarding the passing game:

Either our skill players are very good, or our defensive backs are just awful. Lots of wide open receivers, but give the QBs credit for getting the ball to them most of the time.

You can ignore most of the running game. They blew the whistle as soon as the runner was touched. So, 2- or 3-yard gains might have been much better if a tackle was broken.

I wish I could get a feel for how both lines looked, but it's hard in this type of scrimmage.

uThats what i thought when I watched them move the ball well last year. I thought they looked decent. Turns out the D did suck.. but so did the offense. Its so hard to tell but hopefully what you saw was real and they are much better than last year on both sides of the ball.

I wanted to go but wasn't able to make the schedule work. Based on the Gazette's recap, I'm encouraged that the TE's seem to be our best group. That's something I thought we've been lacking in recent years and it's a group that can really help in multiple areas. However, I'm discouraged by Maynard's note that bad penalties were an issue. That's been a problem with UMass football for as long as I can remember. Boneheaded dumb mistakes at important times. That needs to get cleaned up.

dumb classless comment coming from a transfer QB on an 0-12 program that lost to Bryant and got embarrassed by the entire MAC. Not what I want to hear from a representative of the University.
